¿Sabías que la famosa marca de cátsup Heinz fue la primera empresa en producir de forma masiva y comercial los frijoles enlatados en el mundo?

Antes de la Revolución Industrial y de la colonización en América este alimento era cosechado y consumido habitualmente por los nativos americanos mediante recetas completamente caseras. Fue en el año 1895 cuando el empresario Henry John Heinz comenzó la fabricación a gran escala de los frijoles cocidos dentro de envases metálicos herméticos en su fábrica ubicada en la ciudad de Pittsburgh en Pensilvania. Las latas de metal se sellaban y calentaban para destruir por completo las bacterias basándose en el invento patentado por el comerciante Peter Durand en el año 1810 lo que permitía crear un vacío perfecto para mantener la comida sin contaminar. Esta innovación en el envasado facilitó la distribución masiva del producto transformando por completo los hábitos alimentarios globales de la población durante el siglo XX.

The smoke is now MUCH STRONGER outside. Air was yellow-brown at sunset. Kinda unbreathable.

#Frijoles #fire near Nambe north of #SantaFe #NewMexico this afternoon. Now over 2000 acres after doubling overnight.

Hiked up #Frijoles canyon in Bandelier to see how the #beaver dams are doing. We hiked as far as the Natural Bridge in the narrows, where we had lunch. On the way back I counted 19 stream crossings (so *2 for the whole hike) and 11 beaver dams. None of the stream crossings were particularly difficult; someone has added stepping stones to some of the crossings that didn't use to have them, so we kept our feet mostly dry.

I'm settled into baking the house's bread from here on out and we are going to get way more heavily into cooking with dry beans than we heretofore have.

Here (see alt text to copy as text) is a #SlowCooker recipe for Charro Beans I've been making for a while. Just throw all this into the cooker (I just put the whole pepper in and remove later) and go.

It is served with chopped cilantro and limey squeezey. Can also be refried.
