Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu with Andrew Young (Behold!)
Gather ‘round, Dragon Ball devotees and gluttons for punishment! This week on Play Comics, we’re subjecting ourselves to the digital equivalent of getting hit by Frieza’s Death Beam repeatedly-Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu for the Game Boy Advance. Imagine taking the most explosive anime franchise in history and cramming it into a game with all the fiery intensity of a damp firecracker. Spoiler alert: This isn’t a battle for glory-it’s a battle for survival against one of the most bafflingly awful licensed games ever conceived.
Joining me in this masochistic quest is Andrew Young from Behold!, who’s agreed to lend his expertise (and his remaining sanity) to dissect this pixelated travesty. Together, we’ll answer the burning question: How did a game about planet-destroying superhumans end up feeling as thrilling as watching paint dry on Master Roshi’s houseboat? Hint: It involves more clipping issues than Yamcha’s career and combat mechanics flatter than Krillin’s scalp.
From animations that resemble a PowerPoint presentation gone rogue to a soundtrack that sounds like a kazoo orchestra trapped in a washing machine, Taiketsu doesn’t just drop the ball-it spikes it into the core of the Earth, unleashes a Spirit Bomb of disappointment, and then forgets to animate the explosion. Whether you’re here for the schadenfreude or just morbid curiosity, grab your Dragon Radar and a stiff drink. This episode’s gonna hurt. A lot.

Le immagini della violenza non sono mostrate. Nel momento del linciaggio prendono il sopravvento la figura del burattinaio e la musica. Nel padiglione durante la proiezione un ensemble interpreta dal vivo la colonna sonora e gli eventi della storia suonando le ocarine.
Si tratta di Ensemble Liminare, un gruppo indipendente di musica contemporanea con sede a Città del Messico e dedicato alla musica sperimentale. Intanto due attori distribuiscono il giornale creato dall’artista e scritto con l’alfabeto criptato, che contiene un saggio critico su alcune questioni politiche messicane.
[…] “Dal punto di vista artistico, ho studiato il modo in cui la scrittura è crittografata, inventando una forma di tipografia astratta: una strategia che preserva i contenuti dei testi, altrimenti messi a tacere se fossero resi leggibili. Per il Padiglione del Messico alla Biennale Arte 2017 ho codificato un alfabeto secondo le leggi delle lingue formali, partendo dall’astrazione fino a raggiungere il livello della figurazione, in cui la comunicazione può avvenire apertamente”.

[In a country like #China, where free expression is more or less limited, the uniquely seductive, fluorescent-lit and very sensual #paintings of #Chinese #artist Tao Siqi stand out. The artist, who is based in #Shanghai, pursues an open exploration of bodily sensation: pleasure, disgust, attraction and repulsion. After her debut at #Frieze New York 2024 with #CapsuleShanghai in the Focus section, her paintings started attracting the attention of international collectors.
Siqui is in her late twenties and unassuming—perhaps the opposite of what you might expect from her oftentimes provocative work. When Observer met the artist in her Shanghai studio, the vast range of references in her paintings outstripped her English vocabulary, but with the help of translators, we were able to dive deeper into the rich narrative and literary references embedded in the work. We talked with the painter about her primary sources of inspiration, her process and some of the places she feels her paintings are taking her.]
