What brings great dread to me, is that 98% of people I know can’t put a proper name for the philosophy we swim in.
”Easy, capitalism”, they’ll say. But that’s way too broad. Capitalism and market economics can be done in a trillion different ways.
What this is though, it has a name. It has a philosopher, it has an economist, and it has a school.
It’s Hayekian:
”Economic freedom is the basis for all other freedoms.”
It’s incorrect, but #FriedrichHayek’s words have framed our current world.

Friedrich Hayek no solo fue un economista; fue el cirujano que diseccionó la anatomía del totalitarismo moderno. En su obra cumbre, Camino de Servidumbre, Hayek lanzó una advertencia que hoy resuena con fuerza en América Latina: no hay libertad política sin libertad económica. Para que un Estado controle la economía, debe controlar a las personas. Debe decidir qué trabajas, qué consumes y qué piensas. Lo que comienza como una promesa de "orden y justicia social" termina inevitablemente en una concentración de poder donde el individuo es solo un engranaje reemplazable de la maquinaria estatal. 🧱💥
La historia nos ha dado la razón: mientras más se concentra el poder para "organizar" la sociedad, menos oportunidades hay para los ciudadanos. El socialismo aplasta la innovación porque prohíbe el error y castiga el éxito individual. Al final, los únicos que prosperan en este sistema son los planificadores, mientras el pueblo queda atrapado en una igualdad que solo existe en la miseria. Como bien decía Hayek, el mercado no es un invento humano para dominar, sino el único sistema que permite que millones de personas vivan juntas en libertad sin que nadie tenga que mandar sobre el resto. 📉⛓️

En este 2026, frente a los nuevos intentos de control estatal y colectivismo, las ideas de Hayek son el antídoto contra la tiranía disfrazada de "planificación". Economists refer to these as "externalities"... often not hidden (air pollution in LA is pretty obvious) as much as unaccounted for...
"Externalities often occur when the production or consumption of a product or service's private price equilibrium cannot reflect the true costs or benefits of that product or service for society as a whole.... since resources can be better allocated, externalities are an example of market failure."
👉 #MarketFailure 👈 is the key concept. So called #FreeMarkets are often incomplete, because not all of the #StakeHolders are at the bargaining table.

I found this book very helpful to understand a) what #capitalism is, b) why (in a well-managed form) it is probably the best economic system we're going to get, c) how conservatives have perverted and shaped it, and d) how to push back.
