There's a nice autum sun here, great for taking better pictures.

I've been practicing guitar again after a long break and want to shout out Novelists for #FridayFaves - they have these sweet guitar playthrough videos with tabs that are super nice for learning. Wish more bands did this, there's no way I could figure out something this complex by ear :P (also the music is very good)

Almost forgot #FridayFaves, let's go with Darkwood today. This one is a mixed bag when it comes to gameplay (I find the combat pretty frustrating), but it's also some of the finest atmospheric/surreal horror I've ever experienced. The game uses randomness and fairly minimal sounds and visuals to maximum effect, generating incredible amounts of tension and subsequent relief. There are also several story moments that were so impactful to me I still often think about them. Highly recommended.

Some music for #FridayFaves for a change
I've been listening to Kin by Whitechapel a ton lately. I didn't fully appreciate this album when it came out, but it's now one of my all time favorites. Everything about it is _powerful_ - Phil Bozeman's voice, the somber guitar melodies, the blast beats, the story about trauma and healing, it's all an incredible emotional journey. Here's one of my favorite songs from the album, but definitely listen to the whole thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtDBryaeLw0

I'm on a FromSoft kick lately - I mentioned Dark Souls 3 already, and before that I played Sekiro for the first time. I didn't expect to like it very much, and early on it felt like that expectation was correct, but as soon as the game let me start fighting strong singular bosses instead of annoying crowds of little dudes, I was in. The 1-on-1 fighting feels fantastic and almost every boss is a ton of fun. Overall not as much my thing as the Souls series, but an excellent game. -
One of my favourite games is Dungeon Siege; an ARPG from 2002.
While it is a rather linear, railroaded experience there are quite a bit to like about it:
A very atmospheric world
No loading screens
No mountain of lore to read/listen through
A party that levels up in skills as they are used
Quite a bit of different armor and weapons to try out as the game progresses
Very easy combat, point and click, no special moves to remember -

I replayed Dark Souls 3 this week and I must say I didn't give that game's world design the credit it deserves last time I played. Most of the areas criss-cross into themselves in all sorts of cool ways reminiscent of early DS1, and I absolutely adore those moments where you climb somewhere high and see all the areas you've explored in the distance around you. Best boss fights in the series too, just a fantastic game. -
Joining in with a Top-25 video game list for the #FridayFaves !
I'm really picky with the games I get so a lot of these are ones I've had (and replayed) since childhood.
I tried to limit it to 1 game per series but in some cases the games just were so different, I couldn't exclude one. (Like Majora vs. BotW and Kirby Air Ride vs. Nightmare in Dreamland)
I could have also included Overwatch because it's so much fun to play but the lack of meaningful progression just kneecaps it in my eyes.

Some Discord friends and I were making favorite game lists earlier and I figured I might as well share mine here for #FridayFaves. Top row is probably my all time top 5 (but I didn't think about it very hard), bottom row is childhood nostalgia, rest is nothing in particular

Back to platformers for today's #FridayFaves - Wings of Vi is a precision platformer with three movement mechanics - jump, flutter and slide - that chain into each other in all sorts of ways to create very fluid and nimble-feeling movement. The fluidity also applies to the combat, which is very fast and demands strong mastery of the controls. This game has some of my favorite 2D boss fights ever. It's also the second game I ever speedran back in 2015 :D

#FridayFaves is looking quiet today, but I've got tons of games left to talk about so here's one:
SOMA is my favorite horror game. Its ocean floor setting is a fascinating one to explore, with a wonderfully tense atmosphere but few outright shocks and scares, just how I like my horror. The story is also a highlight (a rarity, it takes a lot to get me to care about a story), creating a driving sense of mystery and asking tough questions about consciousness and humanity.

#FridayFaves time!
Spelunky 2 is a larger, more polished followup to the most elegant game system ever created. The various procedurally generated traps and hazards interact in ways that consistently strike a perfect balance between chaos and controllability, while heaps of secrets weave beautifully into the game's overall structure. The movement and action are a ton of fun, but it's ultimately a game of knowledge and strategy. My favorite "roguelite" ever for sure.

Anybody using https://marathontv.app/? They just released the web version, have been going solid for a year. I like it, better than the 3 other trackers I've tried, better than being tracked by IMDb.

For #FridayFaves today I want to talk about The King's Bird - it's a fast-paced precision platformer about gliding in the air and dashing along surfaces. The movement has some idiosyncratic quirks that can be frustrating but give it a ton of character and nuance once mastered. There's an amazing sense of agility and freedom. Also, I'm only exaggerating a little when I say it's the #1 prettiest game I've ever seen and it's not even a contest. Plus it's on sale right now

This #FridayFaves tag seems like a fun excuse to ramble about my favorite indie games. Most of them are platformers, but I'll start with my favorite game of all time, Beat Saber.
I'm not usually into rhythm games, but the dimensions added by VR motion controls make such a nuanced and expressive system it never gets old. I've clocked about 1300 hours into this game and I still end every session looking forward to the next. And on top of all that it's good exercise too.

#fridayfaves The latest installment of Lorenzo Etheringtons #howtothinkwhenyoudraw just turned up on my door - they are great art books filled with bite size art tips for all sorts of different things - anatomy, smoke, trees, all sorts from a drawing perspective. I'd highly recommend them to anyone, beginner or seasoned ✏️
