38,000 river-cleaning mussels released into Washington, DC’s Anacostia River, and counting! Volunteers came out to help the Anacostia Watershed Society and Nature Forward reintroduce these small but mighty filter feeders to the river.

"Only a handful of freshwater #shellfish populations remain in #England. #Conservationists have been monitoring the #RiverIrt, home to the #CriticallyEndangered population of ~300 mussels.
To try and help the #mussels, they have been improving the habitat by stabilising the river bank, #PlantingTrees and adding boulders to the water. They also released juvenile mussels."
