Just emailed the mayor and councillors of the City of Fremantle to suggest ways to extend public transport to the west side of the Freo CBD (they used to have a free shuttle bus there, but that was cancelled 3 years ago).
I don't expect much reaction as I'm not a local resident, but I am a recent visitor and Freo relies a lot on tourists; so maybe my words will help push the issue along. Always worth a try.

New at my Patreon... The tale of the wreck of the 17th century Dutch ship Batavia is one of treachery, mutiny, brutality and revenge. I ponder its story and visit the ship's preserved remains in a dedicated museum in Fremantle:

Jeez I'm glad I got everything I wanted to do done in the morning. There are sheets of rain falling against the hotel windows right now. Freo is right next to the Indian Ocean, so the weather can have its dramatic moments.

Here's a variant of "benches you can't sleep on" which I haven't seen before. High Street, Fremantle.

Since they cancelled the free CAT shuttle bus a few years ago, there's been no public transport at all in this western side of the Freo CBD. Not huge distances TBH, but a bit rough if you have mobility issues (like my currently dodgy knee). They should sort something out.

My Fremantle hotel has a big print of this postage stamp on a corridor wall. Which is... fine, I guess?

OK when it reached 10am this Freo cafe became full of young people dining and drinking coffee. It isn't a public holiday here in WA, so why is this so?
I'm always asking this in Melbourne too - I suppose loads of people nowadays are working from home, or are on shifts, or studying, so they can rock up to a cafe on a weekday.

Having breakfast at Good Things cafe in Fremantle. This is their amazing chilli eggs: "Korean sambal-scrambled eggs, soy caramel, crispy shallots, coriander, bacon, chilli, roti".
Funny thing is, I've been here before, years ago, when it was known as The Attic. In fact I spent most of a day here in 2018, catching up with my notes near the end of the round-Australia rail journey for my book Heading South.
In those days, like most Perth cafes, it didn't do table service - but as all the seating is upstairs from the counter, it was a pain to order a second coffee! Now they have table service, thank god.

Now that I've had an old-school pasta feed at Capri, I'm having a quiet drink at my fave Freo hidden laneway bar: Strange Company. Nice place, very mellow on a Sunday evening.

The cafe I'm patronising, Chalky's Espresso, is inside the former Fremantle tram depot which opened in 1905. Gotta love a tram connection, but it's sad they are no more.
It's quite a historic location, this - on the right you can see the Round House, a former convict prison and the oldest still-standing building in the Perth metro area.

New at my Patreon... This stretch of South Terrace is sometimes known as the Cappuccino Strip. That nickname has a try-hard sound to it nowadays, but in the 1980s it was entirely justified as Italian-style espresso coffee finally broke through into the Australian mainstream. And here's a pioneer of that breakthrough in Fremantle - Gino's:

Odd thing at this rooftop bar - you can order food via a QR code on the table, but not drinks. No idea why. For drinks there's a very long queue to a bar. So I'm sitting here enjoying the sunset, idly hoping the queue subsides at some point (I don’t do queueing).

At the rooftop bar at the National Hotel, Fremantle, an old fave. Weather is going be rainy after today, so I thought I should grab the opportunity.

It is ridiculously sunny here in Freo. I am feeling jealous of this winter weather, even though I'm currently actually in it.

From a boutique hotel in old warders' cottages to a huge new brewery sprawled along the docks, here's my hot tips to nine of Freo's newest and best for Traveller:

There's a full-electric coffee van at hockey. No generator noise and fumes. I am a fan. We can see the ocean from this ground and it's bright sunshine, bit fresh though. #CoffeeVan #Quiet #OceanView #Freo

Hockey down in Freo in the morning (for the boy, not for me). Little trip out. Might make a few more cracks in the "our kids have been on the same team for years" parent clique.
Might do a selfie. Probably circle the pitch a few times to get my step count up.
Might wander the town a bit afterwards, sees what's happening.

Finally finished some #SteamPunk #Jewellery ready for my first #Freo market this weekend!
(If you see something you like, hit me up before the weekend - am happy to sell to my other Fedizens - I have Kofi now, so #FediGiftShop could be a thing for me too!)
