With this image, I want to draw the attention of Diaspora* users to the fact that they are on the outskirts of Fediverse and are limited in their interaction with other nodes.
I used Diaspora myself once, but left in time. Another thing I don't like about Diaspora is that if a user's channel is deleted, all of their posts that I shared also disappear without a trace, whereas on Hubzilla they are preserved.

Years ago (pre-cloud) I used to self host at home, but as the cloud grew there became little point in this d-i-y approach. But as you say, now the cloud has become such a bad place, the d-i-y approach is back in fashion again !

The level of passive aggression on #fedi is starting to seriously concern me. This isn't even a mild nitpicky criticism anymore. Please stop subposting about each other and actually practice direct communication and teach each other how to be better people in a way that isn't condescending.* People do not learn to become better versions of themselves by you doing that at all.
I'm leaving it at that. This is not a subpost and applies to everyone on the fediverse.
*to be clear I'm not making a broad generalization here, just calling out those who do engage in said behavior

Also back to interested in comparing use cases for #Sharkey vs #Frendica vs #Discourse and what type of community and communication each would support. Sharkey is a step between Micro-blogging and maybe #myspace, while Friendica is a step back to older versions of #Facebook, and Discourse is a good forum software for a community of topics and subtopics that (should) federate.

I want one UI to wrap all the other services for, to carry on conversations with all the content across services and those underlying services are invisible to me. This does not seem like a big ask on the technology side.

Could one make private discussion groups accessible to folks on #Mastodon by creating a #frendica instance with the @nameofDiscussionGroup that could be followed.The frendica group would be set to need to approve followers so only those in that discussion group could follow nameofDiscussionGroup.
The group would boost each post sent to it followers only.
The members of the discussion would see each post as a boost with the original author and nameof... as posters. Yes?

the #Fediverse is boomingI joined my first Mastodon instance in the fall of 2022 and I have been having so much fun with it ever since. Since #Reddit did their IPO and started selling my personal data to AI companies without my permission or consent, I have stopped using all corporate-owned social media. But to be honest, Reddit had such an immense community of diverse people that Mastodon has never been quite as interesting as Reddit… until now.
Thanks to the Unite States’ biggest tech company CEOs publicly supporting Donald #Trump, people have finally started taking serious the threat that is corporate owned social media. #ActivityPub services like #Mastodon, #Frendica, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Lemmy, #PixelFed, and #PeerTube are experiencing another major surge in the number of users as people abandon #Facebook and even more people abandon Twitter. The same thing happened in 2022 when Elon Musk bought #Twitter.
I follow close to 550 people and almost 200 hashtags now and this has kept my feed interesting enough for me to enjoy logging on to the Fediverse every day. But since Trump’s second inauguration, my feed has started overflowing with new posts — the new posts are coming in literally non-stop now.
In 2022, I feel like Mastodon hit a critical mass where it became interesting and fun to use. In 2025 now, we hit another point of critical mass of users where it has actually become better in quality than corporate-owned services such as Reddit. More importantly, I think people are starting to realize that they can’t trust corporate ownership of any public service, the re-election of Trump has shocked people out of complacency. So this is tiny bit a of good news in the otherwise dense fog of horrifying current events.

@robz Let's keep asking these questions. Maybe #Frendica will evolve. Perhaps #Mastodon will get some "group" feature. What is key is that the host needs to have a baseline of users that means they don't need to signup to a new ecosystem to join each group. #facebookalternative #facebook

Какая то идиотская ситуация.... я зарегистрировал #frendica и меня просто выбросило из учётной записи, пароль якобы не подходит. Теперь сбрасываю пароль, но сгенерированный при сбросе тоже выдаёт ошибку и не впускает в учётную запись....

Bem, bem problemático. Depois da palestra de ontem na Semana do #SoftwareLivre do Brasil sobre #fediverso, fiquei pensando que as instâncias de #mastodon no BR poderia tudo ser #frendica ou outras implantações legais do #activityPub. Seria bem mais divertido e aumentaria muito as possibilidades.

Well! That a broad use case to be sure, but - there are alternatives for it all.You're already familiar with #mastodon of course, but there's also #pixelfed, which is #federated as well, but more image-focused, like #instagram.
For a Facebook-like experience there is #Frendica, #diaspora or possibly #HubZilla.
For Google search, try #duckduckgo. For Google drive there's #seafile. For google drive & docs & way more, there's #nextcloud (it's plugin system makes it a veritable swiss army knife).
