  3. From @joannechocolat

C (1914 – 1944) was a British agent in France in the Second World War who served in the Special Operations Executive.

She became the first female #wireless operator to be sent from the UK into occupied France to aid the French #Resistance during #WW2.

    From the BBC history archives:

She was born in Moscow to an Indian father & American mother and was a direct descendant of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century Muslim ruler of Mysore. Khan's father was a musician and Sufi teacher who moved his family first to London, then to Paris, where Khan was educated and later worked writing childrens' stories.

She escaped to England after the fall of France. In November 1940, she joined the WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) and in late 1942, she was recruited to join SOE as a radio operator.

    Sounds like quite the life!

  22. Noah's Ark

Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was the leader of the French Resistance network "Alliance", a position she inherited after the capture of 'Navarre' who had recruited her. To the Germans the Alliance was known as Noah's Ark because it's members were all given code names of animals. Fourcade was known as Hérisson ("Hedgehog"). Their goal was to gather information about German troops in France, + transmit this intelligence to Britain. They also aided downed British airman to return home.

Many of Fourcade's agents were captured - including her second-in-command, Léon Faye, with whom she had a child during the war. Fourcade herself was captured twice, escaping both times. The 2nd time she took off all her clothes + squeezed through the bars of her cell with her dress clenched in her teeth, crawling across the street on her hands + knees before dressing + making her escape!

She survived the war and passed away in 1989 at 80

  24. Feb 18, 1944: On this date, the Allies bombed Amiens Prison in the north of German-occupied France. Named Operation Jericho, the goal was to free political prisoners and French Resistance fighters imprisoned at Amiens. “Of the 832 prisoners, 102 were killed by the bombing, 74 were wounded and 258 escaped, including 79 Resistance members and political prisoners; two-thirds of the escapees were recaptured.”

  25. #OnThisDay in 1905, Andrée Peel née Virot was born.

She joined the French Resistance during World War II and saved the lives of 102 allied pilots. Andrée survived torture and concentration camps. She later lived for many years in Long Ashton with her husband. Her autobiography is named Miracles Do Happen and I highly recommend it.

The quote is taken from her autobiography and it appears in Unsung Women in Somerset.
