I still think the onus ought to be on the platforms themselves and not on ‘bans’.

Either a platform is kid friendly (that is with rigorous mediation of posts and enforcement of rules and conduct — for which they would be totally responsible)

    OR

A platform is not kid friendly and will ‘vet’ new members in any way they deem appropriate and be solely responsible if kid under a certain age get access to the platform.

Period. No other way is near equitable. It’s their product, they should fess up. Govt(s) timidity is what gives us ‘bans’; low hanging fruit and bugger the consequences on privacy and private information monetisation seems to be the rule. Plus, censorship bans are never water tight and kids are tech savvy (unlike our polies).

  3. Marine Le Pen is campaigning. She thrives in campaigning. Judicial problems are likely to come again in early 2027 but there is only 22% of Yes in a poll (by Cevipof) to the question: "Do you think politicians are honest?". French citizens routinely favour sentenced politicians if popular. So we may expect populism to grow and prosper in France up to the presidential election in May 2027.

Meanwhile the government supports brutalisation and shows that check and balance are a problem: the minister champions a law project to change the current law whereby a police officer who uses his weapon must prove that his or her shooting was necessary and proportionate.

Meanwhile the government makes military ceremonies enter schools: (fr) blogs.mediapart.fr/b-girard/bl

Well, so much for the weight of her words — though why I expected a #fascist to stick to their words is beyond me. #MarineLePen goes back on her words and despite (or in spite of) the ankle bracelet she has to wear for a year, she will run for the Presidency. I guess that since the world appears okay with a #felon and #fascist in the White House it will also be Okay for some French electors to support someone who’s also demonstrably into #Grift and #Corruption 24/7

WIll the world ever learn that #Fascism isn’t good for us, ever…?

  10. It is Hilarious that the ‘new’ French government, with loathsome people like Retailleau and Darmanin (again) is out before people even know how to pronounce the names of the new ministers.

May I humbly suggest that Macron Reads The Goddamn Room before he tries again to foist a lot of minority party has-beens on a country that voted for the LEFT last time?

  13. Hoping that after Madam Le Stylo's conviction no one bothers to protest. Nasty woman with nasty ideas who has been caught with her fingers in the till.

Sadly there are plenty of other fruit loops on the right to step into her shoes, and the centre and left is devoid of anyone with any charisma or public profile.

Macron is a spent force and his party has drifted to the right and into obscurity...

  14. OMG the moaning from various quarters here in France about the Marine Le Pen sentence, including the prime minister who finds it concerning.

We also don’t need lessons on democracy from… checks notes… Vladimir Putin.

The simple solution for her to not get barred from running for president was not to do a massive embezzlement.

  26. When I last wrote about the fallout from France's election this summer, and President Emanuel Macron's refusal to nominate a Prime Minster from the coalition of left and left leaning parties that gained the most seats in Parliament, many people predicted (and I agreed) that Macron seemed likely to work with the right (including the fascist National Rally and its leader Marine Le Pen) to effectively steal the election. Perhaps to the surprise of no one, Macron has now done just that and appointed Michel Barnier as PM despite the fact that Barnier's party gained only 8.3% of the seats in the election.

    commondreams.org/news/macron-r

Macron Names Right-Wing Prime Minister, 'Turning His Back' On French Voters

"The election ended with the Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP), the left coalition, winning a plurality of seats at 32.6%, Macron's own Ensemble coalition of centrist neoliberals winning 27.9%, and the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) winning 24.6%. NFP and Ensemble coordinated their efforts in the final round, forming a "republican front" to block the RN—a successful effort that drew praise from left and centrist figures across the world.

Barnier's center-right party, Les Républicains (LR), once a powerful force in France, gained only 8.3% of the seats, yet emerged victorious in the prime ministerial sweepstakes following Macron's negotiations with RN leader Marine Le Pen, who's thought to have agreed to Barnier's appointment. Without RN's support, Barnier could be ousted by a no-confidence vote in parliament.

In late August, Macron rejected the NFP's proposed prime minister, Lucie Castets, a little-known civil servant and economist whose nomination was itself a compromise reached by the parties within the NFP, which include the center-left Parti Socialiste (PS), the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI), and Les Écologistes, a green party.

Les Écologistes on Thursday condemned Macron's choice, saying he was "obsessed with the preservation of his neoliberal record" and he'd aligned with the far-right."

The important thing to understand here is that Macron has ultimately stolen the election, and ignored the will of the people; who banded together and cast votes for the expressed purpose of stopping the fascist right in France from taking power. Of course he was able to do so because no party won a true majority, but the left coalition (Nouveau Front Populaire) did finish with the most seats, and would reasonably assume the right to form the government under normal circumstances, so Macron has told French voters to pound sand because he'd prefer to work with the fascists regardless of how people voted.

There will of course be those who argue that this is not an open capitulation to fascism, because Bernier is not a member of the National Rally, but as the article notes given his rightward turn on immigration, and the fact that he didn't support the republican blockade to stop La Pen and the fascists from winning, I think that position is obtuse; at a minimum he will be relying on support from National Rally to stay in office, and is thus likely to appease them and support significant portions of their fascist agenda. Of course, Macron himself has spent several years appeasing the fascists by tacking hard right on migrants, nationalism, and anti-left policies, and also didn't support the republican blockade so the argument that there even is a French center has rightfully been derided by many left wing observers with far more experience in French politics than you or I.

Stepping back into an American perspective however, I think this speaks to a larger problem in capitalist, Pig Empire politics I've been talking about for a long time. The simple truth is that when push comes to shove, the capitalist "center" (which is objectively a right wing position and always has been, even if it's not expressly fascist) hates the left, their electorate, and the idea of restricting predatory capitalism so much that they will invariably align with fascism, and against sharing. This is because at the end of the day, this so-called "center" has far more in common with the fascists, than it does with socialists, or even just poor people who want a better deal for their families. They both think some deserve to live, and some deserve to die, that some deserve to enjoy opulent wealth, and some deserve to toil in servitude to that opulent wealth. They only disagree about how to sort out who is who, but if you examine the final tally the folks doing the dying are mostly the same in either outlook.

Furthermore, this dynamic is only magnified under the specter of fossil fuel induced climate crisis; when the choice becomes capitalism and mass murder, versus socialism and sustainability, these folks will pick capitalism every time, even if it means working with nazis. Mark my words, we will see many more Macrons in the Pig Empire in the near future.

  27. I don't know how well folks are paying attention to what's going on in France right now, but left wing politicians in the French government are accusing President Emanuel Macron of trying to steal an election, as well as conducting a type of coup and given the available evidence, I'm having a hard time disagreeing with that sentiment.

    commondreams.org/news/french-l

'This Election Is Being Stolen From Us': French Left Calls Mass Protest Against Macron

"Leftist parties in France on Tuesday accused President Emmanuel Macron of election theft and announced mass protests after he rejected Nouveau Front Populaire's proposed candidate for prime minister, even though the left-wing coalition won the most seats in a snap parliamentary contest last month.

The left-wing parties that formed NFP in June to fight off the surging far-right expressed outrage at Macron's decision, with the Jean-Luc Mélenchon-led La France Insoumise (LFI) Party condemning Macron's dismissal of a leftist government as a "coup" and urging a "firm response from French society."

Although I must confess that I'm not an expert on the French system of government, on some level this seems like an extremely straightforward story. Back in June, Macron responded to his "centrist" party's extremely poor showing in European Parliament elections by calling an ill-advised snap election. As you can imagine, this did not go well and for a while it looked like Marine Le Pen's fascist National Rally party would win control of the country, until the burgeoning French Left and the country's centrist parties worked together to defeat the fascists at the ballot box. This left the parliament divided, but crucially the left wing parties working together controlled the most seats, which in turn means that the new French Prime Minister should be someone chosen by those parties. Except Macron, whose centrist bloc came in second place behind the left coalition but ahead of the fash, has been openly antagonistic to the left in France his entire time in office. Since the election he's dragged his feet and delayed naming a Prime Minster until now, when he's used the excuse that he believes a left wing government would immediately face a vote of no confidence (presumably engineered by the fascist right and crucially his *own* centrist bloc) to reject the left wing alliance's choice for Prime Minster entirely.

To say this is highly irregular, even unprecedented would be more than a mild understatement; from out here it looks like after the French left saved the country from fascism, Macron is preventing them from taking power pretty much entirely because he's a reactionary capitalist pig who hates anyone left of Otto von Bismarck. Furthermore, it's important to keep in mind here that the fascist right doesn't have the ability to collapse a left wing government on its own, so Macron is more or less admitting that his centrist bloc would work *with* the goddamn National Rally to do so; all of which makes this situation rather a lot like putting a gun to the country's head and saying "I can't let the will of the people stand because then someone, specifically us, would pull the trigger and blow the whole thing up."

Now that left wing alliance, the Nouveau Front Populaire, is (accurately, as far as I can tell) calling this a coup, organizing for Macron's impeachment, and promising to take the fight to the streets. In the meantime, Macron's government, which has already resigned, remains in power in a caretaker role. It's unclear how long this can continue on, but for the moment Macron is doing exactly what the left is accusing him of doing - stealing an election, against the will of French voters at large.
