Decentralization does not eliminate the racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, conservative moderator who uses his/her control of the largest instance to impose his standard of #FreezePeach and forces his targets to accept such harassment as the cost of "access" and building "clout". It simply creates the sample of a dozen fascists running wild rather than one fascist billionaire in charge. Neither is acceptable.

The problem with most free-speech debates I see online are that they're framed around what someone is allowed to say in an online public space.

That isn't a thing. Those don't exist, unless someone is talking about the open-comment database on their local township's dog-poop ordnances. Nearly every space online is a private space. Someone is paying for that domain name, those servers, and that bandwidth... And with very rare exceptions, it's not anybody's tax dollars. If Reddit admins want to collapse threads or auto-moderate so the word "Duck" isn't allowed in their subreddit... That's their subreddit to do that in until the actual owners (Reddit) say otherwise.

We're approaching the problem wrong if we're talking about shaping public discourse. The Internet isn't public discourse; it's a million semi-private conversations in someone else's parlors. And given the technical nature of the machine, that may be more-or-less what it's architected to offer.

There are so many aspects to the Mahmoud Khalil situation. It's obvious on its face that the Trump administration is not following due process, and that Mr. Khalil's free speech rights within the US are being violated.

At the same time, the way this case is being reported on by so many is absolutely foul, as Mr. Khalil's specific exercising of his free speech rights are no more morally virtuous than those of the hateful Proud Boys were in the Unite the Right Rally- that is to say they were hateful, violent, and potentially illegal not as speech, but under other provisions of the law.

In other words, what should have happened is that Mr. Khalil should have been given a due process hearing for his actions, and then if found guilty, immigration should have then taken action.

Neither wrong here negates the other, elevates the other, or erases the wrongdoing.

Supporting Mr. Khalil's rights is fine, but in the same way one does for a Nazi.

Remember when the extreme right people would talk about their "Free Speech" rights, and we all knew what they wanted- which was to use "Free Speech" as a pretense to cause harm to Queer folks, and Black folks, and anyone they didn't like.

We called it out. We made fun of them, called it "Freeze Peach", etc.

When someone, under the pretense of "Free Speech", physically assaults someone else, sprays hate messages on their home, shoots at their school, physically blocks them from entering their school or work, gives away maps of where a "certain type of person" lives, etc. that's also not "Free Speech". It doesn't matter what the cause is, and if it's someone from the Left doing it. It's still not okay.

Call it out. Call it Freeze Peach. Call it whatever the hell we need to call it to make it stop.

And if you defend this stuff, then as far as I'm concerned, you can go to the same place as the Proud Boys go.

In the #Drupal community we're hearing the term "Open Web" being used a lot lately. The #Pantheon hosting service has used it to justify their platforming hate groups such as the "Alliance Defending Freedom." https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/04/webops-platform-pantheon-defends-hosting-hate-groups-as-developers-quit/

And now the #DrupalAssociation has issued their own Open Web Manifesto https://www.drupal.org/open-web-manifesto which specifically references inclusion and diversity as requirements while expressing no awareness or concern about how the "Open Web" is being used as a dog whistle for free speech absolutists that don't mind seeing many of us marginalized, attacked, and pushed out of the community.

I assume that the DA have good intentions about the potential of the Open Web to create a more open and free society. However to repeat this term without recognizing that it is already being used within our community to rationalize behavior that does the opposite of what they claim to be working for is either naive or disingenuous.

We can't make the world or our community better by ignoring the problems it has. A true commitment to diversity and inclusion means making an effort to change the systems that have made tech famously homogeneous and hostile to people who don't fit the mold. So I would like to know whether @dries sees Drupal's Open Web Manifesto as aligned with Pantheon's position https://pantheon.io/platform-content-position that protecting the "Open Web" means they must do nothing about actual hate speech and campaigns to deny human rights.

I just don't think we can have it both ways.
