I-10.
The drive from Palm Springs to Tucson is a little less than six hours. The most direct route is to just jump on Interstate 10 and head east, passing through Blythe and Phoenix before making the more familiar trip from Phoenix to Tucson.
Before getting to Buckeye, a small town about 45 miles west of Phoenix, there’s an electronic sign that shows the distance to Tucson via I-10 vs SR 85 to I-8 (the ‘Phoenix Bypass Route’). Today both numbers were neck in neck to the finish line, so we made our way down SR 85 to I-8.
Like I-10 from Palm Springs to Phoenix (with a brief moment of activity at Blythe), I-8 is very desolate from Gila Bend to Casa Grande, where the single digit ends and we’re brought back to I-10. This bypass not only bypasses driving through Phoenix, it also skips the notoriously backed up, significantly under capacity stretch from Queen Creek to Casa Grande, where the Interstate should probably be 3 or 4 lanes in each direction but it’s only two.
This is not ideal for a freeway between Arizona’s two largest cities. But the Gila River Indians had a different take on the subject and now the U.S. government likes to mess around with funding intended for the improvements needed on that stretch of highway.
There was talk of beefing up rail service between Tucson and Phoenix, and another study was initiated a month or two ago, but I probably won’t see anything significant in that arena in my lifetime.
At least our drive was very pleasant. I enjoy the desolate views.
