I don't normally like to promote products but after years of suffering through #turbotax, I got so fed up with their lobbying of congress to block free tax filing options and did a little reading. Bottom line, was that #freetaxusa (dorky name) worked extremely well, imported my old intuit data, website is faster, much cleaner flow through the sections and federal filing is free... Would recommend.. Link here if you want to try it

#TaxAct upgrades me to their deluxe package b/c I paid $3 in foreign taxes, charging $60 EXTRA.
...so I'm trying #FreeTaxUSA. They note b/c I paid below $300, I don't have to file Form 1116 for the foreign tax.
...TaxAct.com is charging me $60 for them to do absolutely nothing. Assholes. I'm done.

Three years in a row filing my taxes (mostly) painlessly, considering, using FreeTaxUSA in about half an hour from literal start to finish of the whole process (getting forms, resetting login, entering info, filing, logging out).

Thanks Mastodon peeps for suggesting FreeTaxUSA instead of the crooked TurboTax. Free federal filing and $14.99 to file States. Nice.

#Tax question for the hivemind. I file my taxes through #FreeTaxUSA. Over the weekend I was able to log in and work as usual. On hearing about the Nazi toddler coup in the #treasury department, I'm wondering about a couple things.
1. Will FreeTaxUSA keep working?
2. Is it better to file our #taxes ASAP or wait to see how things settle out? -
Just did my taxes in about 10 minutes using the same free (for Federal taxes, based on income) tool I used last year, which is very similar to use as TurboTax (which fraudulently charged people for years who should have had their returns done and filed at no charge).
The one good thing about Florida is no state income tax.

@roadskater Alright, I take back the good things that I said about #FreeTaxUSA's support. They've now told me the wrong thing *twice*. First they assured me that I didn't screw up filing NY taxes (but I actually did), and then in a follow up their suggestion for how to fix it doesn't actually work.
I think I figured out how to fix it, but they also told me their software can't efile just an amended state return (I'd have to also do a federal amended return), so I have to *mail* it in.

re:
> Friendly reminder: TurboTax is a pimple on the ass of society.
Yeap, that's correct, #FreeTaxUSA is way better alternative, not just because it allow us to not give money to #TurboTax, it really does the work just fine.
But, we shouldn't need neither of them, nor any other company to do our taxes.
The tax process should be as easy as a 2 pages form, prefilled, written or web. for free. The #IRS has all the info for the majority of the cases, W2, 1099-xxxx, etc.

@roadskater It turns out that I *didn't* fuck it up. I thought I did, but the efile company's support pointed out that I did the correct thing elsewhere in the federal filing section, and they automatically transferred things correctly to the state section. So that's nice, and thus I deleted the toot.
Still unhappy with having to do this stupid tax filing bullshit in general, but A+ experience with #FreetaxUSA's software and support.

Switched to #FreeTaxUSA for filing my #taxes this year. I don't want to support #Intuit by using #TurboTax, and it was not only much less expensive but better in some ways.
Because TurboTax imported 1099-B data, I entered adjusted cost basis for each transaction. FreeTaxUSA didn't import, so I entered the aggregate values. Ended up being less typing in the end. IRS already has the 1099-B anyway, but FreeTaxUSA prompted me to attach it.
Other than that, it was very uneventful. Recommended.

This is an annual reminder that there are much better (free) alternatives to Intuit's #TurboTax for filing federal #taxes if you're looking to do it on your own.
I'm personally a big fan of #FreeTaxUSA, but there are a ton of great alternatives out there for anyone willing to do a little research.

Filed using FreeTaxUSA for the first time and it went great! So happy I can do my taxes without giving any money to Intuit. #taxes #freetaxusa #irs

Income taxes in the USA are extremely frustrating, but it got quite a bit easier as I moved off TurboTax and onto FreeTaxUSA.
The interface is super easy to use while also allowing me to deal with complex forms and worksheets. Highly recommended.

CW: Consumer ranting about Intuit
Wow, #Intuit #TurboTax is just awful.
I mean, I do know that they've been lobbying against tax simplification in the US for years, because it would cut into their business, and that's pretty evil.
But their customer service is apparently also terrible!
I need to file a particular New York State #tax form this year, and apparently they just don't support it, and aren't planning to.
Which seems to mean that I would have to manually enter the data, which seems to mean that I couldn't then e-file or get their correctness guarantee. And if one uses software to prepare the return, one is required by law to e-file!
So it seems like I just can't use their software at all. Which is maybe good!
When I tried to call them to ask if they support the form, their robot call director asked me what I wanted, mis-heard me, and insisted on knowing whether I wanted the irrelevant information it had found sent by text or email; "no" was not a valid choice.
Then it insisted on knowing my last name, but failed to understand me when I tried to pronounce or spell it (and I have a pretty ordinary voice, and not all that unusual a name!) and eventually it said goodbye and HUNG UP ON ME when it couldn't.
I had to call back and pretend that its incorrect guess at my last name was correct, before it would pass me to a representative. And the first thing the human rep (who was very nice!) asked me was for my first and last name, so the whole robot torture conversation was useless as well as annoying.
I think they're just trying to get people to give up on calling them.
Which in my case probably means switching to #freetaxusa which is cheaper anyway, and does support the forms that I need.
Sheesh!

@andy @kkuchta +1 for #FreeTaxUSA. This will be my 3rd year with them and no problem. Granted that my tax paperwork is pretty standard: W2 x 2, 1099-NEC & 1099-INT x n

If you're about to do taxes and grudgingly giving #TurboTax money - there are other options. I've been happily* using #FreeTaxUSA for the past few years.
* I mean, as happily as one can reasonably be while doing this stupid tax busywork.

@ProPublica aside from the nonsense that is our tax system, and how it can be overhauled to just make sure we are being honest without things like deductions and stuff….
I used https://www.FreeTaxUsa.com and it let me file for $30 total (because I work in one state, live in another) and aside from adjusting from the TurboTax interface it went pretty painlessly.
