Ahmad al-Sharaa (Al-Jolani), Syria’s interim president, is due to visit Berlin at the invitation of Friedrich Merz.
This decision is no coincidence; it is a political signal.
Whilst deportations are being stepped up in Germany, a figure with a violent past is being given political prominence.
His responsibility for massacres, femicides and oppression must not be ignored.
We say clearly: No normalisation of violence and authoritarian structures!
At the same time, the incidence of violence against women is rising here too. Women worldwide are fighting against patriarchal systems – including in Rojava, where autonomous women’s structures are under pressure.

While negotiations are underway in Berlin and Brussels about ‘reconstruction’ in Syria, cooperation with the so-called transitional regime and billions in aid, marginalised people in Syria continue to be barbarically persecuted and killed.
Kurds, Yazidis, Druze, Alawites and LGBTQIA+ people are affected daily by displacement, violence and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, while at the same time German politics threatens to undermine human rights standards.
After talks with Syrian interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has promised a financial package of around 620 million euros for 2026 and 2027, officially for reconstruction and humanitarian aid in Syria.

The relief and borderline bewilderment I feel at seeing Assad's demise can only be a tiny fraction of what those who knew his victims must be feeling. I hardly dare to believe it. This man is responsible for some of the most heinous atrocities committed against civilians this century. It's quite incredible. Words cannot overstate how evil this regime was.
