As with so many other things, the real solution would be two things:

1. Support decentralized systems wherever possible (financial, using for your creations, submit code, help with triaging or community support, documentation, translation etc)

2. We need to massively simplify self hosting. Currently #Yunohost #Freedombone #Freedombox seem the best options, but all need to simplify more of the technical side for normal users. Helping out these projects would help greatly, too.

@bob is #epicyon installation guide good to use on a #freedombone setup? I tried installing on bare debian 9 VPS yesterday and failed. Today I'm reinstalling my VPS with debian10 and freedombone. Was going to try #epicyon next... #notAnExpertAtTheseThings...

@ericbuijs @Gina Anyway I would not even think about selling out my data myself, apart from what I already "sold" out unknowingly. BTW #freedombone looks promising. Only problem I see with a homebased server is the protection of your data...

@Gina I'm all for owning and controlling our data but not for selling our data because that would be ethically wrong. It eventually would corrupt us. Besides Mastodon and the Fediverse in general prove that we can own and control our data without selling it. Other (and IMHO better) projects for owning and controlling data are #Freedombox, #freedombone and #TinCan.

@yojimbo good to know. What do you see as the advantages of using Sandstorm for this, over using a self-hosting distro like #YUNOhost or #FreedomBone?

@icedquinn @kenton it seems like there is a whole generation of server apps now that would work better with something like Sandstorm. Optimized for efficient self-hosting by individuals and informal groups. But I wonder if they would be better to pay for a static IP at someone's home or office (or a VPS) and use #YUNOhost or #FreedomBone. It wouldn't be worth running Sandstorm for just one person or group, right? They'd need a Sandstorm provider (like Oasis but smaller)?

Hey @bob do you think it could be possible to sync a bunch of #FreedomBone instances into a server mesh? Imagine 5 friends and I have FreedomBone installed on a spare device at home. They all sync their data whenever 2 or more are online at the same time, and as long as one is online at any given time, all the services they collaboratively host are available. Could it work?
