Series two lesson two of Free Association's improv course is about a thing they call "grounding".

For a scene to be believable, it must be grounded in reality (or in a fantastical scene at least grounded in an emotional truth).

Improvisors can often jump quickly to the bizarre or the outlandish to try and get a laugh, but especially in early in scenes the audience needs to first know who these people are and what is going on and why they should care about any of it.

Three hours of scenes deliberately drilling practice of to have nothing strange or out of context happening, scenes in which everything goes according to expectation and nobody tries to be funny.

A useful skill to drill perhaps, but you can see why Free Association get a reputation for being too serious and not laughing enough.

Three hours of scenes where mostly nothing happens might be the most dull improv evening I've had.

Some work days are fragmented due to meetings or co-working sessions or the nature of the tasks at hand. I don't do well with having my routines and sequences disrupted, and on such days, I will seek activities which have a calming effect and are enjoyable. Proof-reading HTR-results is such an activity: it's monotonous, requires a certain focus and attention to detail while it provides immediate gratification for every error I find and fix.

I would roll, if someone kicked me… 🥴

Some critiques of horizontality/non-hierarchy are basically: "horizontality/non-hierarchy+ABC bad things or minus XYZ good things = some less than good/effective thing." But that's an issue of the absence of XYZ good things / the presence of ABC bad things-- not horizontality

The same could be said of many critiques of direct democracy (direct collective decision making). Direct democracy+ABC bad things or minus XYZ good things is unsurprisingly not as ethical/effective as Direct democracy + XYZ good things and minus ABC bad things.

It is when there is a gestalt of multiple liberatory processes/practices/goals that various necessary but insufficient features for liberatory organizing can meaningfully thrive and mutually qualify each other.
