Italy renews 41bis regime against Alfredo Cospito
‚Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio has decided to renew 41bis for Alfredo Cospito. The measure, expected by 4 May, was notified to defence attorney Flavio Rossi Albertini and confirms the hardest possible line: no retreat, no review, no doubt. It is not a technicality. It is not administrative routine. It is a deliberate political choice that must be called by its name: revenge.
41bis is not a simple restrictive measure. It is prolonged isolation, deprivation of contact, restriction of speech, rarefaction of social life to the point of unbearable. It is a regime that depletes the person, that reduces existence to controlled survival. For this reason, for years, jurists, observers, and organisations have labelled it a form of torture. Not a metaphor: a description….‘

Italy: 18 anarchists sentenced for Alfredo Cospito solidarity demo
‚The trial in the first instance of one of the two parts of “Operation City,” related to the 4 March, 2023, demonstration in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito (who at that time had been on hunger strike for months against Article 41 bis and life imprisonment without the possibility of parole), concluded last Thursday, 16 April in Turin, Italy. As a result, all the defendants were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 18 months to 5.5 years….‘

‚Alfredo Cospito is an anarchist comrade jailed since 2012, initially arrested and sentenced (along with another comrade) for kneecapping the CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare. He has served his sentence for that crime (the other comrade is now free), but he is currently serving a 23-year sentence issued in the “Scripta Manent” trial. This was a repressive operation against 20 years of FAI/FRI actions. Comrade Anna Beniamino is also serving a 17-year sentence for this repressive operation.
In May 2022, he was placed in 41 bis, a “harsh prison” regime invented in the ’90s to psychologically annihilate mafia “chiefs” and force them to cooperate. It is now extended to over 700 prisoners, including members of revolutionary groups such as BR-PCC. In October 2022, Alfredo began a six-month hunger strike against the 41-bis regime and life sentences without parole, his likely fate according to the terrorism and political massacre charges…‘
