Frederick the Great's eulogy on Julien Offray de la Mettrie.

Frederick might have fallen out with Voltaire, but note his Voltairean remarks on La Mettrie's clerical critics.

I really must read "L’Homme Machine"

  2. Frederick the Great -- Flute Concerto No. 3 in C Major: I. Allegro

I enjoyed listening to this on KMFA yesterday

I confess that my interest in the piece is in part prompted by an extramusical motive, the identity of its composer. I have an interest in Frederick II, so I wonder if I would have enjoyed the piece so much if the announcer had introduced the work as a composition of a contemporary of the Prussian king, the now largely forgotten Friedrich Klein of Kotzen, musician in the von Bredlow household, and author of "Der Christliche Musiker", a work described by one musicologist as "an unenlightened conservative's amalgam of pedantry and bigotry."

Am I unable to know what my response would have been?

  3. A quotation from Frederick the Great

The more I see of people, the more I love my dog.

[Je mehr ich von den Menschen sehe, um so lieber habe ich meinen Hund.]

Frederick II (1712-1786) King of Prussia (a.k.a. Frederick the Great)

  5. @SesameSquirrel That recording is from 2011. It was actually recorded as a concert DVD and Emmanuel Pahud also recorded his own album of compositions by Frederick the Great (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK)

  6. First we have Frederick the Great’s “Flute Concerto No.3 in C major, SpiF 90” (tinyurl.com/4y8k9wuu) which despite the title is written for Orchestral accompaniment to the a Flute soloist. Like most of his compositions, it features intricate phrases that lend themselves to showing off a flautist’s virtuosity

  7. King Friedrich II of Prussia AKA Frederick the Great (January 24, 1712-August 17, 1786) was a German-Prussian monarch, writer, military theorist, flutist and composer. A prolific composer when he wasn’t busy with being the king, he wrote 121 sonatas for flute, 4 flute concertos, a symphony and various arias over the years. Unfortunately, due to the Time™️ and the culture of Western European nobility, he lived his life as a closeted Queer man.
