“Chic”
Frederick Douglass’ first pocket watch. Douglass wrote that, for a formerly enslaved man, it was more than just a fashionable item — it was a powerful sign that he was free and that his time was now his own.

💔 Couples 💔
"If one stands in so intimate a relationship with a man as I do with Douglass, one comes to know facets of the whole world, of men + women, which would otherwise remain closed, especially if it is a man whom the entire world has seen + whom so many women have loved."
A 20 year friendship between Frederick Douglass & German born feminist, freethinker, + abolitionist Ottilie Assing was to end in tragedy. After learning that Douglass had married Helen Pitts, Assing killed herself by swallowing cyanide in a public park in Paris. As per her will all her letters with Douglass were burned. She bequeathed him ongoing income from a trust fund + his choice of books from her library.

🩶 Couples 🩶
“Love came to me, + I was not afraid to marry the man I loved because of his color”
Frederick Douglass & Helen Pitts married 2 years after the death of his 1st wife Anna. He was 66 + she, 46. They married amid a storm of controversy. Both families objected to the marriage. Douglass’ children felt his marriage was a repudiation of their African American mother. Pitts' family, alrhough friends to Douglass + abolitionists, stopped speaking to her. The couple remained married for 11 years, until his death in 1895.

A quotation from Frederick Douglass
The American people have this lesson to learn: That where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

A quotation from Frederick Douglass
Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them. and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.
