  1. The structure of “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” Has always fascinated me. Essentially the 36 variations are grouped into six groups of six. In each group, the first 5 variations explore some aspect of the theme (harmony, rhythm, etc.)+ all variations incorporate some element of improvisation THEN the sixth is a "summary" of the five prior variations. The last group of six variations summarizes all 30 variations that came before.

  2. I almost picked a version performed by Rzewski himself but I kept running into performances that were combined with other compositions of his so they ran rather long performance and I have a hard 11:30pm CST light’s out so.. yeah.. You can listen to/watch a performance combined with his 2016 composition “Rising” here (youtu.be/st8QlF2LKrU?si=jdHfpd) and one that’s bookended by his pieces “Saints & Sinners” and “Stuporman” (youtu.be/UOd0nTHPN_Q?si=fwWvpd)

  3. A dedicated, lifelong socialist Frederic Rzewski’s work reflected his strident political views and “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!”is by far one of his most blatant in this regard. The song is comprised of 36 variations on the the Chilean song "¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!" by pianist & composer Sergio Ortega and the political folk collective Quilapayún (youtu.be/kTLrFjYt8tA?si=4ocY9X)
