Petal es liviano. Un disco pop bien definido que, pese a ello, se queda en un camino que se siente estrecho.
Pero, atención, las buenas canciones están por todo el setlist para quienes se acerquen buscando música coherente con la artista y no solo a buscar hits. Justo ahí está la gran baza del álbum (sin ser tan completo como Eternal Sunshine).
Se tratan distintos temas, ninguno novedoso en el pop, y, pese a mojarse (oír el primer sencillo), Grande es muy suave resolviendo, de modo que parece que donde debiera dar taconazos lanza eso, pétalos. Musicalmente se eleva el conjunto -de nuevo- huyendo de baladas puras y dramones gracias a los sintes y a los beats de la música negra, sus favoritos. Freak, en mitad de la lista, despunta con su finura y el tempo, que recuerda al de The Boy Is Mine.
Otra buena muestra es Petal, el tema y single, con una melodía bellísima muy bien desarrollada vocalmente sobre una instrumentación percusiva tan minimalista como sus arreglos de ligera distorsión, clásica y oscura. Al contrario que Stay, que sí se siente una novedad por la aplicación de la electrónica en el fondo (al igual que kiss me, que podría haber estado en el disco anterior por su júbilo), sin llegar a sonar ambiental, dreampopera o shoegaze, pero se agradece la salidita del tiesto. No como la aproximación a la Lana del Rey más oscura que es like i do, que deja a medias como esa oh well más rockerilla de base, en la onda de aquel primer -y engañoso- single de Alba Reche.
Se diría que Ariana se propuso salir a pasear sin mapa y por el camino no pudo evitar pasar por caminos ya recorridos y consultar la ubicación. Lo hizo bien en Petal, solo que redondeando lo que ya sabía hacer y abriendo ventanas (o descorriendo cortinas) en lugar de puertas. Nowhere, Nobody sería el resumen.

For years, I have lived with the aftermath of a major stroke, hemiplegia, weight, discomfort, and all the indignities that come with a damaged body. None of it was beautiful. None of it was noble. It was simply what had happened.
After enough years of suffering, I began to see that the body was giving me facts.
Breathe. Move. Rest. Eat less. Get up. Walk. Pay attention. Do the next thing.
That is the whole system.
The body is not asking for #philosophy. It is asking for #breakfast. Then breathwork. Then a #walk. Then rest. Then perhaps irritation. Then perhaps #laughter Then the next thing.
And the next.
And the next.
It is not unlike ChatGPT. There is no little person inside either of us running around with a clipboard. There is just the next movement, the next word, the next breath, the next necessity.
For most of my life, I made all of this into a problem. I had fantasies about death, ideas about enlightenment, thoughts about escape. I believed I had to understand everything.
Now I see something much simpler.
There is only life while it is being lived. There is waking. There is sleeping. There is waking again. And one day, there will simply be a last time I go to sleep.
I cannot experience death. I can only experience life.
So death has lost its reality for me.
Not because A Course in Miracles tells me there is no death. Not because I believe a doctrine. Because when I look directly, death is never here.
Life is here.
Breathing is here.
The body is here, demanding #attention again.
Probably lunch.
Nothing matters in the way I once thought things mattered. And yes, I will still get irritated. I will still get pissed off. Someone will say something stupid. Technology will fail. The body will complain.
But irritation passes.
The weather passes.
The #body passes.
The next thing appears.
And I do that.
No freak out. No spiritual drama. No need to become anyone.
Just the next thing.
