From School Librarian to Activist: ‘The Hate Level and the Vitriol Is Unreal’

Amid a surge in book bans nationwide, the #Louisiana librarian Amanda Jones was targeted by vicious threats. So she decided to fight back. She went to court against her attackers, and then wrote a book. And, she still a #librarian.

  2. In #Florida, the complaint of just 1 parent can get a book moved off a school library shelf. This week, a local bookstore gave away free copies of "The Hill We Climb" by Amanda Gorman, "The ABCs Of Black History" by Rio Cortez, & "Love To Langston" by Tony Medina, as a way to push back against #censorship in Florida schools. The #Freadom book giveaway was hosted by Books & Books, & paid for by Gorman & a local donor.

  7. Amanda Jones is a hero, fighting #bookbanning in schools and public #libraries, and in 2022 Defenders article in #publishersweekly. Latest update on #GoFundMe: "...I signed with Sarah Fish of The Tobias Literary Agency to write a book about my ordeal and about the censorship attempts by extremist groups...If you know of an educator or librarian being defamed and/or harassed online, please reach out to them. Your messages mean the world." #harassment #Freadom

  8. I’m annoyed that #fREADom people (that is, #FreedomtoRead), #librarians (especially #schoollibrarians), and our national and statewide #library organizations are still on #Twitter after this week’s debacle. Twitter is now in direct opposition to our profession’s stated values. What will it take?
