Context: I still have the laptop I used for #FirstRobotics for 2006 and 2007 (maybe 2005), and it still has the complete development environment for those IFI controllers.

2811 just got picked for Alliance 1 at #PNW #DCMP and I'm losing my mind right now. I have been saying for *months* that we built a fabulous defense bot. Drivers don't want to hear it (they want to score points). Now defense might just punch our ticket to #FRC Worlds.

I love the irony of a large team of humans resetting the field after every match for this season's #frc game.

Sunset over the Orange River. In 2024, we camped here on the riverbank in a small border village called Onseepkans. The next morning we crossed over into Namibia and headed up to the Fish River Canyon.
Not sure about our overnight plans this year, but we are definitely heading up to the FRC again.

Hi @in_sympathy,
What would you suggest as the power supply for SBCs like OrangePi or RaspberryPi in a 12V chassis which may fluctuate wildly? It's an #FRC robot. There's a 5V "regulated" source on the chassis but its advertised capacity is only 2A max. So my first thought was a dedicated step down from 12V to 5V. Seeking expert advice. Thank you.

Needed: #PDX area front-end #developer willing to #volunteer time to teach and mentor a high school FIRST Robotics program.
The Tactics & Strategy wing of the Skyview Robotics program has been working on a data collection and reporting tool and could use some professional guidance. The mentor "stack" currently includes Product, UX Design, Data Analysis, and Dev Ops, but nobody to teach front-end coding.
The crew meets Tuesday and *possibly* Thursday nights starting in the fall. We may be able to flex that for you though. Reach out for more info. Thanks!

The old robotics team from back home were district finalists in the Newton division for the national championship.
Pride is a weird thing to feel for a sports team. Yes, we founded it. But I don't know a single student on the team now, I'm pretty sure I don't know a single mentor, and that was 20 years ago. I'm only connected to them in story.
... Still feels great to see them fly so high though. I do get to revel in the progression from knowing how little we knew about what we were doing back in 2000 to watching the students that share the number build an incredibly precision machine that does precisely what it's told.
There is a solution. Believe it.

My #frc team (6238 Popcorn Penguins) just qualified for the championship for the first time in our 8-year history! I'm so proud of this team and our scrappy little algae bot.

Congrats FIRST Robotics Competition #FRC Team 2702 on placing 3rd at the Ontario District University of Waterloo event this weekend and clinching a spot at the provincial championship in April.
In FRC, high school students and adult mentors design and build a robot and compete in a new game challenge every year.
My son's on the team this year, and I'm a mentor.

Both #SkyviewRobotics teams are competing this weekend and... I haven't been up since 4:00am. I'm not at the venue. I'm not working on losing my voice already. For the first time in 10 years, we're competing in a Saturday-Sunday event, not a Friday-Saturday. My brain is actively rejecting the oddity of it all. #FIRSTRobotics #FRC

FIRST Robotics time again, and this year I'm judging, which requires some pre-work.
The hardest part of judging is the final few rounds, when we're trying to decide to hand the award to the team that walks on water or the team that cures leprosy. Lemme tell you: one of the reasons I keep doing this event is that. The original purpose of FIRST is to inspire the next generation of students (originally the future engineers, but increasingly just good people who know how to be good to other people).
That's a head-fake. The inspiration is circular. These students make me want to stand up and demand the world be better because they fucking deserve better from it.
When I'm tired... Bone-tired, blood-tired, forty-years-in-the-same-flesh-tired... These kids ain't ready to quit yet and all of a sudden, neither am I.

Hey all! For any #frc folks, are there any good resources for vision? I'd like to use the apriltags to align and score, but I don't know much and was hoping to learn more.
