Francis Hutcheson, teacher in Dublin and lecturer in Glasgow University, "Father of the #ScottishEnlightenment " was born #OTD 1694 in Saintfield, Co. Down and died #OTD 1746 in Dublin.

#WilliamRobertScott died 3rd April 1940 in Glasgow..

Born in Omagh Co. Tyrone into a milling family, he studied in #TCD.

While there he wrote "A simple history of ancient philosophy" aimed at the general reader, and the only extant full biography of #FrancisHutcheson, coining the term "Scottish Enlightenment" and crediting Hutcheson as its father.

Moving to #GlasgowUni (as Hutcheson had before him) he became an expert in #AdamSmith & economics.

This @HistParl post unfairly maligning #Swords :) https://mas.to/@HistParl/109664408722516474 mentions the Molesworth family who controlled at least one seat in the borough for much of the 18th century.

The featured image is of #RobertMolesworth who created the essential definition of an Old Whig, translated #Francogallia and wrote "An Account of Denmark", both historically useful account and extended attack on #PassiveObedience and clerical control in politics. On #Cicero 's birthday, a post about #FrancisHutcheson who chose Cicero’s "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (“On the ends of good and evil”) to hold in the famous portrait by Allan Ramsey (painted late in his life, see below), suggesting some regard for the author.

It also reflects Hutcheson's attitude to #Stoicism. Cicero’s "De finibus" both expounds Stoicism and criticises it.

25 Dec: Thomas Drennan was born in Belfast #OTD 1696. His son, #WilliamDrennan, said of him: "He was the friend and associate of good, I may say, great men; of Abernethy, of Bruce, of Duchal, and of Hucheson; and his character of mild and tender benevolence is still remembered by many in the North of Ireland, and by not a few in this city."

He assisted in the Dublin school of #FrancisHutcheson and was a non-subscribing Presbyterian minister.

#FrancisHutcheson wrote in the introduction to his translation of Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations that the Meditations inspired “a constant inflexible charity, and good-will and compassion toward our fellows.”

Though Hutcheson had philosophical differences with #Stoicism, they were still an important influence on his work, esp. on #virtue.
