  1. #LeMontStMichel PRISON c1800-1863CE
Napoleon 1st, ordered that Le Mont should become a prison. The medieval monks' cells were ready-made prison cells. The island was isolated and already fortified. Repairs and additions were made to the outer defences. A guard house and prison guard accommodation added. Mezzanine floors were built into high-ceiling spaces. Over its 60 years of service, the prison held some 14,000 inmates before Napoleon 3rd closed it, c1863.

  2. MONT ST MICHEL AS THE CITY OF BOOKS

In 966, Duke Richard I of Normandy replaced the earlier community of canons with Benedictine monks, founding the abbey that held Le Mont St Michel for the next 8 centuries. Between bad weather and hazardous building conditions, it took 100 years to complete the Norman monastery. Once installed, the Benedictines copied and produced numerous manuscripts, earning the abbey the title of "City of Books".

  3. PREHISTORIC MONT ST MICHEL.
What is now the Bay of Mont St Michel (from the Cotentin Peninsula to the headland of Cancale) was originally a wooded valley, known as the Scissy Forest. When the sea level rose, the granite outcrop of Le Mont resisted erosion and became a tidal island.
The island has been built on and built over so many times that little remains of its ancient past but there is a rock, carved about 6,000 years ago, depicting a sky map....

  4. Le Mont St Michel is just one and a half hours drive due west from my home in Bagnoles-de-l'Orne.
Basically, it is a granite tidal island in an L-shaped bay. It has a long and turbulent history and is covered in historic buildings and narrow winding alleys with LOTS of steep steps! Not for those with mobility problems or heart-conditions, although it is one of the most visited sites in France. More about its history later.

  5. The Bagnoles-de-l'Orne Casino always has an attractive floral display on the side facing the Lake. The Casino is popular with tourists all year round. At this time of year (September) you will see bus loads of elderly folk, coming to have a flutter at the slot machines. The building also has a posh restaurant and a cinema. The Casino has an interesting history, which I will describe in another post.
