b/c these are hobbyhorses of mine: Fragile masculinity is an entire whole-ass critical theory hypothesis that has done very well in empirical studies. It has to do with the cultural institution of masculinity and how it operates to shape or dominate men's behavior. A longer explanation is needed but a core element of masculinity in this theory (hence the name) is that it is a status conferred on men conditionally (i.e., not just because you grew pubes or turned 18), and it can be (and often is) taken away, leading to devastating consequences for any man in that culture who loses it. Men are, therefore, strongly motivated to maintain their masculinity, performing regular--sometimes multiple daily--actions to demonstrate their fitness as a "man" to culturally important people around them.

I’ve been thinking about the role ‘male insufficiency’ plays in both domestic and public violence; and it occurs to me that mass shooters, incels, domestic abusers and violent racists can often have desperate, unresolved male insufficiency issues in common. • Hostile and benevolent attitudes toward men also almost always positively correlated

#culture and #patriarchy do their thing, pushing everyone toward rigidly-defined gender roles, partly with Benevolent Sexist ideas like "Women are pure and wholesome" and "Men are caring breadwinners." Neither of those is universally true, and both are only applied in certain situations. In other situations, the hostile sexism comes out, e.g. "Women are dishonest sluts" and "Men are violent abusers."

Culture is a bastard in most cases.

A friend recently told me about cycling while female. When she overtakes men it is apparently not uncommon for them to yell something dumb or start pedaling like mad to keep up, or even create dangerous situations in their eagerness to overtake her again. Sounds exhausting.
