My Day at the World Cup
The World Cup is not over yet, but in some ways feels like it’s been gone for some time. This is partly because there’s a multiple days gap between games in the knockout rounds, and partly because the throngs of fans (both international visitors and from local immigrant enclaves) have departed the streets of Boston. On the field, a World Cup where so many of the “minnows” proved themselves worthy to be in the competition and some of the big teams were eliminated in upsets has reached a point where there’s four teams left. And they’re the exact four teams that were the favorites going into the tournament.
At this point you might expect me to post my Semifinal rooting interests but I don’t really have any strong feelings for or against any of the remaining teams. Well, I do feel negative about England but that’s mostly due to English fans being obnoxious at a Yankees-fans level (ironic, since of these four remaining teams, England has the least success at international tournaments by far). So put me down for rooting for good games decided by lots of goals and clean blacy, and not decided by VAR nor penalty kicks! May the heroes be lesser-known bench players who come up big at just the right moment!
Anyhow, I’m going to go back in time to June 29th to write about my day at the World Cup. I was excited, of course, that matches would be played in Foxborough, and hoped to treat my son to a game as a gift for his graduation. I entered all the ticket lotteries but never got a chance to buy a face value ticket, and the secondary market was ridiculously overpriced. So it seemed that we weren’t going to the World Cup. But a couple of days before the Round of 32 match between Germany and Paraguay, ticket prices dropped just enough to be a once-in-a-lifetime splurge.
On the morning of the match, we took the Orange Line downtown. There were German fans on the train and at South Street Diner where we had breakfast – some even from Germany! We arrived early for our boarding group but were waved through. The street in front of South Station was blocked off to process fans, but there was absolutely no crowd at this time. Instead dozens of MBTA employees lined the route pointing us to the platform where we boarded the train. We were on board and moving before our official boarding time.
The German fans applauded when the train started but otherwise it was a routine commuter rail trip (No Scotland, No Party indeed). We did sit near a kid that my son knows from high school though. We arrived so early at Foxbourough that the gates to the stadium were not yet open, and so were diverted into the Patriot Place mall, which I’m sure is exactly as the Kraft Group planned it. Here we saw Paraguayan fans in numbers for the first time gathered by a bar that had signs welcoming “La Albirroja.” German fans were gathered by a taqueria dancing to cheezy eurodance anthems. Unfortunately, if you weren’t eating or drinking (or dancing), there wasn’t much else to do in Patriot Place but sit and wait.
Me and a giant soccer ball.We went through the gates a few minutes before they were supposed to officially open and entered the fan festival area. My son decided to explore on his own which was fine by me since I was hot and already tired of walking. I was not too impressed by the fan fest area which was almost entirely pavilions for corporate sponsors where people lined up for swag, the most popular of which were charm bracelets with unique Boston items. There was also a tent where fans could take a photo with the official World Cup ball, which I duly did. My son met another of his friends from high school and his father Eric. While the boys entered the stadium, Eric and I watched the Brazil vs. Japan match on a big screen underneath a DJ mixing loud dance pop. At halftime, a drum line and a bagpiper performed.
We entered the stadium and met up with my son again where we were allowed to watch warm ups from field level. Ultimately, we made our way up to our seats which were way, way up at the top of the stadium with only four rows behind us. Blessedly, the shadow from the light standards on top of the stadium kept us out of direct sunlight. But it was really hot! For some reason, one hour before game time, they asked everyone to rise for the national anthem of the United States. Then they showed a highlight reel from the 1994 World Cup which looked impossibly ancient. Didn’t the 1990s just happen? I went to get water and a snack at the concession stands. FIFA seems to implemented a standard menu at every stand regardless of what they usually sell during NFL/MLS seasons. Also, the stand I went to was staffed by volunteers raising money for a local Girl Scouts troop. While I guess it’s good that they could do a fundraiser, it felt a bit sketchy that FIFA doesn’t have paid employees for the concession stands!
Pregame pageantry with Paraquay and Germany’s flags.Finally, it was match time beginning with the pageantry of the players processing out with youth soccer players, large flags spread across the field, and the national anthems of Germany and Paraguay. The German supporters were gathered in the end of the stadium behind the goal known as The Fort (das Fort?) while the Paraguay supporters were at the opposite end, kind of off-center, where they played drums for the entire match. In our section German supporters outnumbered Paraguayan, but by far most of the people were neutrals like us. Unfortunately, right behind us was a Germany-supporting American with a dudebros accent who offered a constant commentary of his most negative thoughts through the entire match, particularly disparaging comments about the Paraguayan team and their fans. I can’t imagine spending that much money to attend a World Cup game and choose to be miserable the entire time, and degrade the experience for everyone else nearby.
That being said, once the match began it became clear that Paraguay were not very interested in playing football. Their strategy was a tight defense that cleared the ball or kicked it out of touch every chance they got. It seemed like we were going to get a very dull game. And then out of nowhere, Paraguay’s Julio Enciso scored on a header on what felt like their side’s first attempt at offense. Kai Havertz equalized for Germany early in the second half, and the Germans seemed to have all the chances to go ahead, but 90 minutes ended with the score tied 1-1. Germany seemed to take the lead in extra time on a goal by Jonathan Tah, but on review it was clear that Germany’s Waldemar Anton gave Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill a non-consensual bear hug.
And so it came to a penalty shootout, which by chance was at our end of the stadium! All the fans stood to watch as Germany, who always win shootouts, had two shots blocked by Gill. Paraguay needed just one shot to win, but then they missed twice in a row, sending it to a sudden death round. Germany’s Tah, seemingly auditioning for the Patriots, sent his kick high, perfect for a field goal, but bad for penalty shot. Third time was the charm for José Canale who sealed the unlikely win for Paraguay. The Paraguayan fans celebrated with cheerful music while the German supporters quietly drifted out of the stadium. View from above!After grabbing a bite to eat at Patriot Place, we joined the queue for the train back to Boston. While the wait was longer than in the morning, it still wasn’t all too bad. While in line, the staff kept us entertained with a giant soccer-ball-patterned beach ball. There was also a giant screen showing pregame coverage of the Netherlands vs. Morocco match, which included a feature on the Moroccan community in Revere! The ride home was quiet as all the fans – Paraguayan, German, and neutral – were very tired after a long day in the hot sun.

Germany seemed to take the lead in extra time on a goal by Jonathan Tah, but on review it was clear that Germany’s Waldemar Anton gave Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill a non-consensual bear hug.
And so it came to a penalty shootout, which by chance was at our end of the stadium! All the fans stood to watch as Germany, who always win shootouts, had two shots blocked by Gill. Paraguay needed just one shot to win, but then they missed twice in a row, sending it to a sudden death round. Germany’s Tah, seemingly auditioning for the Patriots, sent his kick high, perfect for a field goal, but bad for penalty shot. Third time was the charm for José Canale who sealed the unlikely win for Paraguay. The Paraguayan fans celebrated with cheerful music while the German supporters quietly drifted out of the stadium. It was not the best World Cup match, but nonetheless and oddly entertaining one. You can watch my view of the game-winning goal here.
View from above!After grabbing a bite to eat at Patriot Place, we joined the queue for the train back to Boston. While the wait was longer than in the morning, it still wasn’t all too bad. While in line, the staff kept us entertained with a giant soccer-ball-patterned beach ball. There was also a giant screen showing pregame coverage of the Netherlands vs. Morocco match, which included a feature on the Moroccan community in Revere! The ride home was quiet as all the fans – Paraguayan, German, and neutral – were very tired after a long day in the hot sun.
