When people talk about a four day week, does that include schools or just office workers? If less time at school, is there evidence on the impact for learning?

The Dutch have been quietly getting on with normalising the four day working week, and it seems to not have had the negative impact many critics have claimed, with the Netherlands' economy still one of the most successful in the EU;
as so often, real political economic change can be organic rather than forced, and in the UK while at an early stage of this process, the four day working week is slowly but surely e becoming more widely adopted. Good!

I'm so happy that I'm only working 80% – on a #FourDayWeek! 😃 I'm doing it intentionally since 1.5 years to have more time to relax 🧘♀️🛌, to learn new things 💡, to have more time for workout 🏃♀️💪 and to spend more time with my partner 🫂. I can really recommend it to others.
For inspiration and sources to the scientific results I can recommend checking out www.4dayweek.com.

I continue to despair about the Labour government I voted for. There are many benefits of doing 5 days work in four days. This looks like a response to Reform rather than anything else.Benefits of a four-day week are ever clearer, despite Steve Reed’s stance https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/oct/30/benefits-four-day-week-ever-clearer-despite-steve-reed-stance?CMP=share_btn_url

More evidence (this time from the public sector in Scotland) that the four day week not only improves workers' wellbeing, it also improves productivity. Moreover, this is a proper four day week - rescued hours but no loss of pay - making it a powerful example, both for the Scottish government's management of its civil service & more widely.
The momentum is building for the four day week & its social benefits....

"A new peer-reviewed study has found a four-day work week improves both physical and mental health, reduces burnout and boosts job satisfaction. 2,896 employees across 141 organisations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US, Ireland and the UK took part in the six-month trial."

I started working a 4 day week around 1 year ago. One of my main motivations is that my brain used to be stuck in "work mode" for most of Saturday, and I wanted 2 full days of real weekend. But having 3 days weekends actually made me better at disconnecting from work, so not only I can actually enjoy my entire weekend, but I also disconnect better during workdays.

If #POTUS - president of USA - can spend a quarter of his days in office playing #golf then it’s about time workers have a #fourhourday or at least a #fourdayweek ?

As more firms shift to a four day week (with no loss of pay), will others' scepticism of the advantages in terms of productivity & staff satisfaction start to change their minds?
Certainly, 5000 workers shifting to a four day week is a drop in the ocean, but if this is a permanent move (not just a pilot) then this may start to see an (albeit) slow shift; it will be interesting to see whether offering a four day week becomes a recruitment issue?

‘I love the four-day week’: south London school part of a quiet revolution: Independent school Liberty Woodland is one of a small number in England experimenting with the timetable
At a small independent school on the fringes of a National Trust park in Morden, south London, a quiet revolution is under way.
Lessons are held in yurt-style tents, or “dens”, dotted around… https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/jan/01/i-love-the-four-day-week-south-london-school-part-of-a-quiet-revolution?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #FourDayWeek #EducationRevolution #MentalHealthInSchools #IndependentSchools #AlternativeEducation

UK Trials Four-Day Week
The four-day working week could be edging closer as a thousand employees across various industries take part in a new pilot of a four-day week in the UK.
Their hours will be cut while their pay-packet will remain the same, with the findings from the pilot to be presented to the UK government in the middle of 2025.
A previous four-day week trial recorded the following benefits:
- 65% fewer sick days taken.
- 57% decrease in the number of staff leaving.
- 35% average revenue increases for participating firms.
Recognising these benefits in productivity, roughly 200 British firms have already switched to a shorter working week according to the 4 Day Week Campaign group.
4 Day Week Campaign director Joe Ryle said, “These incredible results show that the four-day week with no loss of pay really works.”
-
Let's just ensure that if the 4-day week becomes standard, everybody gets a 20% raise so that their weekly pay stays the same. And also the minimum wage needs to increase by 20% for the same reason.

Four-day work week - a Green policy - boosted productivity in LibDem-run South Cambs:
"South Cambridgeshire district council’s controversial experiment with a shorter working week resulted in improvements in performance in 11/24 areas, little or no change in 11 areas & worsening of performance in two areas, according to analysis of productivity before & during the 15-mth trial by academics at the unis of Cambridge & Salford ... https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/jul/08/largest-uk-public-sector-trial-four-day-week-sees-huge-benefits-research-finds-
