Officially a “big boy” #fountainpen owner.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this 3 times now over the years, but with cool weather returning (and with it, jeans with pockets) I can once again show off my #edc little bundle I have dramatically titled "The Implements of Man", consisting if a little brass knife, a little neat brass lighter, and a brass kaweco liliput #fountainpen all in a little hand-sewn leather holder that fits in the little change pocket in jeans~

Bonus points: after a light rinse in water the liliput still writes despite the ink being in it for 5 months unused (sailor kiwa guro ink is the best)

Uni should make a #FountainPen version of the zento signature.

I mentioned that someone on AliExpress was selling Jinhao X750 pens with the Majohn flex nib fitted, but while I was thinking over that Ali decided I needed to see a listing for various colours of X750 on sale. So the purple one for £3.50 went in my basket, and it arrived today. I've just pulled the flex nib from the Jinhao Dadao 9013 where it had been not very successful and fitted it to the X750. Success, of a sort. Still needs the feed to be reprimed every few lines, but it is actually possible to get words out of it.

Unfortunately I don't actually like it very much. Without pressure it's just a scratchy EF. With pressure it's a scratchy F to M that runs dry almost immediately, and I still can't get any real line variation with my writing style. It might be me, or it might be that the nib got damaged during various taking out and putting in operations, but I think at this point I'll write it off. I did buy another nib as a complete nib unit, which I will put in the parts drawer until I feel enthusiastic about dropping £20 on a Majohn C1

I've been journaling in the mornings while I drink my coffee, usually about a page a day. And of course this is a fine excuse to use a fountain pen, right?

This morning I was treated to one of my favourite parts about filling my pens with a syringe, rather than trying to stick the nib down into the bottle and somehow not get ink all over my fingers: I can refiill before the old ink is completely gone and change colours without contaminating the bottle.

I added a vibrant blue into a pen that had been filled with oxblood red... so my journal entry today shades from red to purple to blurple. Tomorrow it will shade from blurple to blue. Lovely!

Iroshizuku shin-ryoku

It's a gentle green, with just a hint of teal in it. It's new to me, but it seems as well behaved as all the rest of the Iroshizuku inks I've tried.

Well the prompt this time was 'Mug' which we do have in profusion here. It's still cool enough - in fact we had nearly 12 mm of rain here overnight that the prospect of hot drinks still has definite appeal (although who am I kidding, we drink hot tea and coffee all year round).

I got @rdm to choose what he thought was the most interesting mug of the ones in the gaming room, and this one was the one he chose. It's one that followed him from his parents' houses to end up here eventually. He thinks it was obtained from some pottery down in the South West. It's been salt glazed, with a wax-resist design of dragonflies, and has a partner mug in the same glaze, with a more abstract design. It's seen a lot of mahjong, boardgames and also RPGs since I met rdm in 1987, and consequently it, over the years.

I had two new things to try out, my untried Van Diemens Ink August 2024 and my just arrived Pelikano Stardust. This pen arrived with an gratifyingly huuuuge cartridge filled with boring blue, so I emptied it and after a thoughtful struggle of which ink, put the August 2024 in.

And started drawing away, all done now, so here we are.

A very pleasant dark blue with just a hint of gray in it and a bit of shading. A very well behaved, if slightly wet, ink.

Drawtober 7th. Bottlebrush Tree

It's Kambarang, our second Spring and the days are getting warmer. The defining characteristic of this season is the profusion of flowers, particularly wildflowers.

The bottlebrush trees are used in my area as street trees, and at the moment they are everywhere in floric profusion.

These native trees are highly popular with honeyeater birds, so we are being visited by Red Wattlebirds, Brown Honeyeaters, Singing Honeyeaters and New Holland Honeyeaters.

I sketched this tree outside for about ten minutes, but I got cold and went inside to finish it.

For those not familiar with the tree, the flowers are tube shaped masses of stamens.

I love heavily shading but pale #FountainPen inks, like this Sailor Byakuya. This fits into a winter palette so well, but I love to use it all year. Haven't tried it with a brush pen - that'll have to be next. #inktober

It's a pleasant, if generic, purple. It's supposed to be water resistant, but I haven't tested that yet.
