@Tak Well yes, useful software becomes part of infrastructure and needs to be maintained.

But then I also believe in #PublicMoneyPublicCode, if we don't want to be at the mercy of VCs then our software and hardware needs to be open and we need to consider #FossSustainability.

So I am totally onboard with the need to put our software into public ownership.

Although to be fair I am biased.

Read this: it was cosigned by @nlnetlabs

Hopefully the @EUCommission will be listening.

@lwn It was rather a shame that the EU had no room for FOSS in Cluster 4 of it's budget for funds like @NGIZero to carry on beyond 2027. So I hope lots of us do give some evidence.

The OSU open source lab is one of those lynchpins for many Projects in FOSS.

Even small projects like @librecast depend on those servers. To be clear we don't host our project infrastructure with them.

But when we do a Librecast release it gets tested on Debian infrastructure to package it for #Debian and #Guix. Which OSUOSL is a part of.

So if you can spare some cash for this lab, please do so.

Our ecosystem depends on this.

@dennyhenke well this is why @ngi and @NGIZero in particular is so important and at the moment there's no future budget for this initiative. #NGIZero has funded fediverse projects.

So post 2027 no new cascade EU funding seems on the cards yet.

Which is why so many of us signed the NGI open letter.

@nlnet will be at #fosdem running a couple of BOFs and will be involved with the Devroom: Funding the FOSS Ecosystem. Which is important for #fosssustainability for the #NGI ecosystem.

We won't be there at FOSDEM, but our hexstickers will as will the stickers for other projects at the NLNet hexstand in Building K level 2.

@Framasoft are doing their annual fundraiser so that it can fund it's existing 2025 planned budget. For 20 years they have been working together to create alternatives to google, but also encouraging others to host their own services.

For their existing services they need to raise 200,000 euros. But imagine if there was enough to do even more.

At a time when The EU is seeking to cut FOSS funding to funds like @NGIZero

Perhaps we need to ask the EU to fund smaller, more communal projects, rather than seeking to create Unicorns.

We do have a massive issue with diversity in Tech. Look to the UK with the recent #innovateuk scandal.

There's very little opportunity for community grassroots FOSS.

So we need to be vocal, and united.

So there's been some more maintainer burnout again. This was written back in April.

" Our industry constantly flirts with burnout, it's unhealthy and ultimately unproductive. This is how you end up with bad actors taking over projects when the project maintainers burn out. "

We need to think beyond code and just paying coders/maintainers. Sustainable projects need funding for the whole ecosystem.

We need to consider and think about #fosssustainability

We have a threat to Fediverse Project Sustainability and to the general grassroots FOSS project funding in the EU. I'm very grateful to @hackstub for raising the alarm.

Last month @librecast signed the Open Letter asking the EU to reinstate @EC_NGI funding to Cluster 4.

I have some thoughts about the situation. Especially since we got our start with @NGIZero

Last week @hackstub made many of the folks in #ngizero funded projects aware of the fact that there was no space in the 2025 budget for @EC_NGI funding.

This will be a threat to #fosssustainability for many of us working in Europe in #FOSS.

@nlnet and @NGIZero has funded many #fediverse apps and other awesome software for the commons.

@ow2 has published an English language version of the open letter that @ps published last week.

#fosssustainability is about more than the money. It's about the community. We have very complex issues to solve and we need many minds and many lived experiences to solve them and not do further harm to our societies.

If you are the kind of FOSS person who is mortally offended by developers/moderators/projects asking for money so they can eat sometime this month.

Take a good hard look at yourself. Try to look outside your bubble. Not all folks can take the time to volunteer their free time.

Maintainers should be paid. Full stop.

Exposure and "It's good for networking for your career", is exploitation and frankly, I'd like to reduce that in FOSS.
