  1. More #FossilSubsidies from the #EU member states' budgets, sure why not. theguardian.com/world/2026/apr

    Technically just a Commission Communication.
    competition-policy.ec.europa.e

I'm sure propping up demand for fuel amid an #EnergyCrisis won't have any side effects. Imagine if instead farmers had incentives to switch to food productions with lower energy inputs...

  2. As for oil, #PaulKrugman points out there's no way to significantly reduce oil usage in the short term, other than by reducing personal use of petrol-powered cars.
    paulkrugman.substack.com/p/how

Doing it on the supply side is prohibitive (you'd need fuel prices to increase by, say, 100-200 % in the USA; or, even less likely, ration fuel). On the demand side I guess you can pay people to commute by bike or public transport. Both options are probably cheaper than the usual #FossilSubsidies.

  3. «More than 1,500 livestock farmers registered for the buyout schemes» in the #Netherlands.

«Europe has more than 24,000 "mega-farms" (facilities with 40,000 or more poultry, 2,000 or more fattening pigs, or 750 or more breeding sows)»
    ftm.eu/articles/netherlands-pa

Yes it's expensive to reduce #FossilSubsidies, there are a lot of stranded assets. It only gets worse if you wait longer. Hopefully these livestock farm owners are being eased into retirement and the land can rest.

  4. Alternative title: fossil fuel company defends #FossilSubsidies.
    reuters.com/sustainability/cli

Fossil fuels still account for 40 % of electricity production in #Germany (and 80 % of total energy).
    iea.org/countries/germany

Any claim that we don't need new renewable power to be connected to the grid is a thinly veiled attempt to jack up energy prices and the value of legacy assets. Are politicians stupid enough (or corrupt enough) to (pretend to) fall for it?

    #EnergyCrisis

  5. CW: uspol

«Trump may be trying to protect polluters from liability through his legally questionable executive orders, but some of his party’s own lawsuits could actually help expose them instead. For climate advocates, it’s a reminder: the fight for our planet will be waged in legislatures, courtrooms and, occasionally, in the very legal battles meant to undermine it.»
    thehill.com/opinion/energy-env

    Fun times...

    #coal #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #FossilSubsidies

  6. @corporateeurope *If* indeed the total funds for the CAP are going down (I'll believe it when I see it), why is this "a recipe for further ecological disaster"? The CAP is essentially a #FossilSubsidies scheme, which props up a very energy-intensive and carbon-intensive industry which would be best left to die. Therefore, any reduction in funds should directly translate to a reduction in emissions. (Unless it's compensated by national budgets.)

  7. A rare case of an IMF bailout doing something good (removal of #FossilSubsidies in #Pakistan)?

«Pakistan sharply raised power and gas tariffs to support struggling suppliers in the heavily-indebted sector. Pakistanis now pay more than a quarter more on average for electricity. [...] Solar made up over 14% of Pakistan's power supply last year, up from 4% in 2021 and displacing coal as the third-largest energy source.»

    reuters.com/business/energy/pa

    #renewables #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

  8. @mario The flip coin is that these fleets are much easier to change. You could offer incentives conditioned on a 10-20 % reduction in the fleet, for example. Employees losing "their" car could buy out the previous one, so they wouldn't necessarily be unhappy.

Any incentives for cars are nevertheless #FossilSubsidies, so they need to be matched but at least equal incentives for public transport schemes (e.g. season tickets for employees).

  9. CW: Fossil propaganda

Reuters does propaganda in such a way, I can't even be mad at them:
    theguardian.com/world/2025/feb

1 paragraph update of the day, 15 paragraphs of filler, 1 final paragraph with the actual facts. Skip the middle and you get the news: 3 billion dollars spent on additional fossil infrastructure to make power grids more fragile.

How wonderful, I'm delighted by our successful cooperation between humans in the face of #ClimateChange.

    #FossilSubsidies #EnergyCrisis

  10. Ah yes, more #FossilSubsidies. Just what we needed for the #EU budget.

«The same EU official said that one option currently under consideration in Brussels is for the EU to subsidize purchases of LNG for countries that currently rely on Russian gas, paying them any difference in price to switch to a U.S. supplier.»

  11. Did someone model what it would take to apply a #CarbonTax on meat and dairy, to be paid by big retailers and wholesalers and balanced by income-tested cash transfers to families?

I found a 2021 literature review by RL Pinto but it doesn't address the actual mechanics.

Germany has shown people can quickly change food habits in an #EnergyCrisis. We must do better than energy import bans and #FossilSubsidies.

#RenewableEconomics for the people that like numbers.

It's all doable but it'll be hard.
    Policies need to change.

Global leaders recently agreed to triple renewables capacity by 2030 while doubling energy efficiency. That'll solve all our problems, they tell us. And it will ensure the world gets to the apparent Holy Grail of 'Net Zero' by 2050. But is any of what they say really achievable?

What's the point of #ClimateSolutions if 'we' sabotage one of the biggest solution ?
Sure, one can say it's an El Niño effect but only if you reilase that this effect is coming back every 6 or 7 years [and will be worse every time].
Sure, it's about eating meat from cattle, raised on the soy sold by #Cargill , one of the worst #EcosideCriminals on the planet.

Not only are these shocking images, they will return every time, more alarming every 6 or 7 years. And FYI : el Niño will peak in the winter [Nth Hemisphere] of 2024 !

Strange story from my home country:
the deliberate flooding of a Dutch 'Polder' (famous Dutch land below sealevel)

    "The Dutch polder dilemma"
by Flavia Cosoveanu for Next Blue

    next.blue/the-dutch-polder-dil

    Quotes:
"Depoldering of the Hedwige polder is a unique case. The Hedwige polder is in the south of The Netherlands at the border with Belgium. ..//.. Hedwige was depoldered or ‘given back to the sea’ in 2018 as a nature compensation measure because of the deepening of the Westerschelde channel for navigation and the expected accelerated sea level rise by 2100."

"For researchers like me, Hedwige raises a lot of questions on the implications of depoldering: How will depoldering affect the multi-functionality of the larger polder landscape in future? How will climate change affect this changed polder landscape?"

  20. How I wish I could tell all the 'I live 100 km from work, I need a car bla bla bla' people to Just Move.

Of course, Just Move is a bit tricky, especially when your life is tangled up in where you live, there are no job opportunities in your area, and the housing market is utterly hopeless.

… But whose great idea was it to live several days' travel by foot from one's daily obligations? The human scale helps elucidate how bananas it is to travel _so much_ every single day. Like, something must have gone wrong in the planning stage somewhere, to think that that is in any way #sustainable.

Even worse is when those people then make it the responsibility of #climate advocates to solve their fucking problem for them before they'll even consider getting on board with anything. 'Here, please solve my short-sighted life decisions for me, or else your cause is stupid'.

The idea that we should both accept and subsidise this absurd daily ritual is a bit ridiculous to me.

  21. TIL: #FossilSubsidies is not only a big thing in The Netherlands, but worldwide!

7% of global GDP is spent on fossil subsidies. For comparison: 4.3% of global GDP is spent on education.

Countering fossil fuel subsidies would not only offer a chance to put humanity back on track to meet its #ClimateGoals, but could also prevent 1.6 million premature deaths per year and increase government revenues by $4.4 trillion, according to the IMF.

  23. @musictraveler
I'm not at all saying i'm "poor" (as in victim) but could agree on us (being you and me as in society) being extremely foolish and driven by egoistical, short term motives.
I am that old and still researching.
My greavance against your toots is that I could agree with you... but
1/ you direct your valuble energy at those that are fighting #ClimateChange and not at those that cause it. The depencecy on oil is knowingly fabricated.
I urge you to take a look at the YouTube clip "How Toronto Got Addicted to Cars" by NotJustBikes.
2/ you reproach the protesters of using oil themselves (I keep wondering how you know?) and that your solution is to #StopUsingOil. While you don't realise that you do too. Nowadays no one can. Everything you eat has been produced while using oil.
3/ Stop blaming consumer but start blaming the producers of oil. Years ago #BigOil started a campaign 'Carbon Footprint' and putting the culpability of future a #ClimateCrisis on the consumer. Demonstrated in the YT video

  24. Every news outlet in the Netherlands broke the news on #fossilsubsidies after it was calculated that the Dutch government fails to recoup 37 billion of tax revenue each year. Except one news outlet: de Telegraaf. Not a peep from them. Keeping a very large part of the Dutch population in the dark. Think about that…

  25. Today all main Dutch newspapers present the new research by #SOMO proving that the NL government is subsidising fossil energy with 37,5 billion every year! They have been promising since 2009 to reduce the subsidies, but if you are not clear about the exact figures, you can get away with murder. #fossilsubsidies

  26. imf.org/en/Blogs/chart-of-the- So here’s our collective commitment to making the planet hotter than Omar Rudberg. Fossil subsidies were never as high as today. #climate #fossil #climatechange #tax #fossilsubsidies

  27. Boring researchers like Demarais keep saying that economic #sanctions fail 87 % of the time. Nonsense. Money talks: over 500 G$ of additional #FossilSubsidies in 2022 prove that the #EnergyCrisis was very effective, if the goal was to privatize profits and socialize losses.

  30. @jon I didn't see this coming: «Sleepers are particularly popular with business travellers, who can swap a late-night flight and hotel stay for a train trip that arrives in a city centre in time for a morning meeting.»

Someone should tell #Traficom, which keeps subsidising short-distance flights claiming they're necessary for the business people of #Finland.

(Hundreds € of #FossilSubsidies for each passenger. They could be replaced with coupons to be spent on trains, hotels.)

  31. More #FossilSubsidies madness: the #REPowerEU proposal would exempt new fossil fuel investments from the "do no significant harm" principle, the bedrock of environmental protection in the #EU, even in the text approved by the EP.
