This is rich. #FossilFuelCompanies blaming each other (as well as the NT govenment) for their own failures to clean up decommissionned wells. #Grifters blaming #other #Grifters for… check notes… #Grifting. What a bunch of *Scrooges*.

They blame the NT govt because it’s not cutting corners in cleaning up the mess left behind in the #TimorSea by #Woodside and the company it sold the delapidated assets to as they wrote the #Endeavour off their books at around 100% discount — #Grifting never stops.

And this is just **One** example of the industry’s absolute disregard for the #environment, their #SocialLicence and what they are legally required to do when retiring #wells. *Grifters* doesn’t half cover their despicable practices.

At least the NT Govt has seen fit to #Fine the industry as a whole to cover the clean up costs and perhaps try to teach the industry a lesson they will not forget. They shoud double the fine imo — it’s not as if the fossil fuel industry can’t afford it. Even doubling wouldn’t cover the damage done over the years.

Yes! Fossil fuel industries, companies & workers in them can be part of solutions: a good reminder!: “we can use their expertise in offshore work for setting up offshore wind. And we can use their drilling + fracking expertise in geothermal drilling [without the chemicals] + water drilling as well. And there are workers already transferring to these other sectors of the economy. "Hope is that virtue by which we take responsibility for the future."”

It could be so good to see these different choices taken & rewarded. Fossil fuel companies don’t have to be ‘the bad guys’. They have so much capacity to be good guys. Sometimes I think they receive terribly poor advice that artificially restricts & limits their options when they could be powering away in new industries that we’d love them to lead.

Sometimes wonder if it wouldn’t be cheaper for fossil fuel companies to just meet their reasonable obligations rather than paying lobbyists to fight against them. They certainly don’t build social capital in affected communities either. How/When did they get so arrogant! 😡

In an alternative universe…🪐 I wonder if there’s anyone on their Boards of Directors saying anything like this (or shareholders even…). For a while there I think at least one of the major fossil fuel companies had a green energy division, but it was shut down or they divested (?BP?). Love to know the Board-level stated reasoning for that… and why they all move as a pack, too. 🤔

@jd that and a total lack of imagination! #FossilFuelCompanies could be at the center of the transition to a hydrogen powered future as they have much of the infrastructure and knowledge to produce, market, and distribute clean hydrogen.
I guess they'd rather double down, fight change, and watch the planet burn than help ... Betting that people can easily be manipulated into tolerating their unsustainable and planet-destructive businesses. Well, so far that approach seems to work ...

#FossilFuelCompanies have shown themselves willing to sacrifice a #LivableClimate for profit. They will never be a partner in addressing the #ClimateCrisis, and it is the height of naïveté to believe otherwise.

Any good and decent person who learned that their business activities threatened the very existence of human civilization would immediately find a way to warn others and change course; but when #FossilFuelCompanies learned their activities were creating an unlivable climate, they covered it up, lied about it, and spent billions of dollars on #Propaganda to sow seeds of doubt about #ClimateScience. For the sake of money, they are willing to sacrifice humanity and the majority of life on earth.
