Amsterdam has become the world's first capital city to ban public advertisements for both meat and fossil fuel products. Since 1 May, adverts for burgers, petrol cars and airlines have been stripped from billboards, tram shelters, and metro stations. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9wejdekpwyo #fossiladban #advertising #Netherlands #Amsterdam

Simon Opher, a doctor and Labour MP for Stroud, backed a [fossil ad] ban on health grounds, citing a government estimate that air pollution could have been responsible for up to 43,000 deaths in 2019, cited in June report from the Royal College of Physicians.
https://www.desmog.com/2025/07/07/compliant-deception-mps-warn-of-oil-industry-greenwashing-at-debate-on-proposed-ban-on-ads-for-fossil-fuels/
“The fossil fuel industry spends millions on promoting itself as green, innovative and responsible, while continuing to invest in exploration and extraction that push us further towards climate and health catastrophe,” Opher said. “That is not just misleading, but dangerous.”

World-first law banning fossil fuel ads survives Dutch legal challenge
https://www.clientearth.org/latest/press-office/world-first-law-banning-fossil-fuel-ads-survives-dutch-legal-challenge/ClientEarth lawyer Jonathan White said:
“By introducing and successfully defending their high-carbon ad ban, The Hague has taken a bold step in the right direction when it comes to climate action.
“As we saw decades ago with tobacco products, banning the advertising of a harmful product is a critical step in reducing its use.
“Just like the tobacco ban, fossil fuel advertising restrictions comply with EU law – as it is clearly in the public interest for cities and states to address the climate crisis.
“Cities the world over would be wise to follow The Hague’s lead and introduce a similar law to help usher in an era of depleting dependence on fossil fuels – and feel confident with the wind of this judgment behind them.” #climate #greenwashing #fossiladban #netherlands

Good news for CommsDeclare. #MerribekCouncil to impose a #FossilFuel Advertising Ban on Council Land. Also a Sports grounds surfaces policy for governance of #syntheticturf adopted, and #Extremeheat measures revised as Council has a Duty of Care.

I've been collating a list of fossil fuel sponsorships in Australia for a year now and you'd think I'd have got used to it.
But I still get the same feeling of disappointment and frustration when I come across a nice organisation, whose work I otherwise admire, promoting climate criminals.

CW: Progress towards fossil ad ban
I showed someone my list of more than 500 Australian fossil fuel sponsorships today and they were dispirited by the length of the list, which wasn't my intention.
I don't feel that way for the following reasons:
1. The list is long but the vast majority of organisations don't have fossil fuel sponsors. Eg there is one children's literature festival sponsored by fossil fuels - and many others that aren't, showing that it can be done.
2. There's significant momentum with major fossil fuel sponsorships being rejected, for example The Perth Festival, Cricket Australia, the Science Experience, Questacon. When controversy over these individual sponsorships are publicized the general arguments against fossil fuel sponsorship also become more widely known and understood.
3. Tobacco sponsorship was just as ubiquitous and seemingly necessary to sports and cultural groups. But we all learned to live without it.
Fossil fuel companies would like us to believe they support everything we love, but they don't. They cherry pick a few events/organisations/regions to support and then exaggerate their contribution. We can have nice things without them.

Hooray?! My Chumps list has reached 500 rows. That is 500 sponsorships by fossil companies for community / sport / arts/ environment organisations in Australia.

It's a lot, but actually, most organisations DON'T receive money from fossil fuel companies.
Unfortunately those that do provide an opportunity for the fossil fuel industry to tell everyone how great and essential they are (they are neither).I look forward to this list getting shorter one day!

CW: #BlueyWashing - Fossil fuel sponsorship
Sunday night - what a great time to go through the New Hope Group's Sustainability Report and get furious.
The Bengalla Mining Company is part of the New Hope Group and mines thermal coal...this has to stop. But they don't wanna, so part of their strategy to keep operating is handing cash to community groups and then taking credit for nice things.
Bengalla coal mine sponsors a Blueheeler Film Festival. The company gets to have a representative on the film judging panel. And get thanked profusely as if there could be no blueheelers and/or film festivals about blueheelers without them.
I've become sadly accustomed to #SportsWashing #ArtsWashing and #GreenWashing generally, but this #BlueyWashing is the limit.

CW: Guardian article Artswashing
Here's an article about Australian arts organizations moving away from fossil fuel sponsorship.
"Comms Declare’s president and founder, Belinda Noble, said the aim of these campaigns is to see national advertising and sponsorship laws for fossil fuel companies become as restrictive as those placed on tobacco companies decades ago, with sporting, arts and cultural organisations being a priority."
That's the dream!

CW: Australia Day sponsorship
After Comms Declare campaigned for only one day, the National Australia Day Committee announced Chevron's sponsorship won't be extended past 2023.
If it only it was that easy to change the date...

CW: Mental Health Fossil Fuel Sponsorship
So the Australian Men's Shed Association is sponsored by the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association. #MentalHealthWashing
For Schools Tree day 2022 men's shedders felt really good about themselves after planting trees with the kiddies then firing up the APPEA funded BBQ for a sizzle.
You could make this up but your editor would tell you it's a bit heavy-handed.

CW: Sportswashing cycling
Excited to learn that the Tour Down Under will be heading through the small town I'll be staying in over summer.
Immediately thinking about my anti-Santos banner. (They have the naming rights)
Will probably just go with a simple, "Frack off Santos" but happy to take suggestions.

I shared this spreadsheet the other day but then deleted the post in a moment of confusion.
Anyway, this is my Chumps and Champs list of fossil fuel sponsorships in Australia.
I had the idea after seeing Tim Winton's speech at the Perth Festival where he said that arts organisations that accept fossil fuel sponsorships aren't evil, but they are chumps.
I'm always adding to the list, and happy to update if anyone has more info.

CW: fossil fuel sponsorship sports
Gina Rinehart was at Trump's campaign launch. I think Australia's netball team are probably feeling pretty good today about avoiding being sponsored by her company Hancock Prospecting.
Unfortunately, she still has other sports in her grasp including the Australian Olympic Team, Rowing Australia, Artistic Swimming Australia, Swimming WA and Volleyball Australia.
I feel really sorry for these athletes who are asked to stand beside Gina Rinehart and thank her for her support, knowing what a destructive influence she actually is.

Trouble with this is that then the only ads from fossil companies that would be seen would be for their tiny greenwashing propaganda projects.

Banning tobacco advertising had a positive impact on society. If we banned advertising for coal, oil and gas, it would be more beneficial, as air pollution caused by burning fossil fuels prematurely kills 8million+ people per year globally.#fossilfuels #fossiladban #tobacco

#Introduction. I write books for young people - published by University of Queensland Press.
I've just finished a qualification in Information Management and would like to work in a public library. I love the National Library of Australia's digital archive Trove and have a podcast called In Those Days discussing newspaper articles that have a personal connection to a guest.
I try to mention the climate crisis a fair bit on social media. I'm particularly interested in the extent of fossil fuel sponsorships in Australia and how these extend social license.
I support campaigns to end native forest logging in Victoria.
I often analyse people through the prism of what netball position they play, or which BSC member they are most like. If I'm honest, I am a WD and a Mallory.
