"When somebody you've wronged forgives you, you're spared the dull and self-diminishing throb of a guilty conscience.
When you forgive somebody who has wronged you, you're spared the dismal corrosion of bitterness and wounded pride.
For both parties, forgiveness means the freedom again to be at peace inside their own skins and to be glad in each other's presence."

Whew. I needed this today. And in sharing it, trust me I understand how hard each of these sentences can be to apply to myself. I hope whoever sees this gets a little better at forgiving themselves.

This means everything to me. I am so sick of other people telling us victims to forgive our abusers. Even the language of saying forgive yourself is offensive to a survivor. Forgiveness is a Christian construct invented by men to make us forgive them for their sins. Forgiveness needs to be taken out of the language that victims/survivors use, we don't need it. It is not our shame, it is theirs. -
