Forever Now: Switchfoot Comes Home to the Guitars

Switchfoot’s new record, Forever Now, dropped this summer as the band’s fourteenth studio album, a thirteen-track, forty-five-minute release on ByDesign Recordings/BMG, and after almost thirty years of following this band, I can say without hesitation: this is a gift to longtime fans. It is not a nostalgia act phoning in the hits, and it is not “Dare You to Move” trying to happen a fifteenth time; it is a band choosing, deliberately and joyfully, to pivot back into the sound that made me love them in the first place.

If you came up on The Beautiful Letdown the way a lot of us did, you know the trap: one song becomes the brand, and the brand becomes the ceiling. Forever Now kicks that ceiling wide open. It leans into the heavier, guitar-forward Switchfoot of Nothing Is Sound and Native Tongue, the version of the band that was never afraid of distortion or of a chorus that actually hits like a chorus. It shares real DNA with Hello Hurricane‘s restless, searching energy, and it is easily the most alive this band has sounded since “Stars” first convinced me they still had teeth.

“Ride or Die” is the clearest proof of that pivot for me. The riffs and melodies underneath it call back, oddly and wonderfully, to old surf tunes; there’s a Jan and Dean or Beach Boys sensibility buried in the bones of the song, sun-bright hooks built for a convertible and an open highway. But Switchfoot doesn’t play it straight: they run it through heavy reverb and a rock production that turns a beach-pop melody into something with real weight behind it. It is the sound of California surf music growing up and putting on armor.

Thematically, the record is one of the most hopeful things Foreman has written in years. The title track and its companions call back to older Switchfoot songs that have always asked the same question in different clothes: what does it look like to actually live your faith out loud, right now, today, instead of waiting for some easier future version of yourself to get around to it? “Forever Now” as a phrase becomes a call to activeness, a reminder that belief is not a thing you hold quietly but a thing you do; it is less a sermon than an invitation, and it lands that way.

“Wake Up, Mr. Crow,” “Ride or Die,” and “Broken Wings” form the record’s anthem cluster, three big, riff-driven, arena-shaped songs that ask the listener to snap back into advocacy and conviction instead of drifting through another news cycle numb. It’s a neat trick, pairing that much muscle with that much heart, and it’s one Switchfoot has always been better at than they get credit for.

If you’ve been waiting for the version of Switchfoot that rocks like it used to, Forever Now is that record, and then some. Put it on loud, and let it call you back to life.

New #switchfoot album is really good, about halfway through. Such a return to form and it feels like there's a song for every fan they've collected in the past (almost 30) years.

The guitar riffs go so hard and the lyrics are on point.

Last Sunday I escaped to the #ForeverNow #festival at The National Bowl "open-air grass amphitheatre" in Milton Keynes. Standout for me was #BillyIdol but obviously the #HappyMondays were as bonkers as expected 😆 .
