The Policy Lab of the EU Comission showed there research about Intergenerational Fairness as a Tool for policy-maker at the Creative Bureacracy Festival. Since 2025 they worked on a definition and policy-tools auch as the seventh generation principle - to ask weather and how a policy will influence the next seven generations.

Podcast Episode: The Most Important Lesson from Mutualism: Save Now
In the late 19th century, when workers in northern Chile arrived to work in the nitrate fields, there were no pension funds, no public health insurance, and no unemployment benefits. They had something more fragile yet more powerful: organized solidarity. It was called mutualism.
What Mutualism Was
Mutual aid societies and workers’ associations were nonprofit organizations created by workers for workers. They emerged to cover needs the State at the time did not address: healthcare, death benefits, education, housing, and a basic pension. Their financing mechanism was straightforward: each member paid a monthly fee. Those funds went into a common pool used to support members in need.
At its peak, between 1891 and 1924, the mutualist movement was the most important social organization in Chile. It paved the way for trade unions, political parties, and the social legislation that governs labor today.
The Paradox of Decline
The irony of mutualism is that the very social laws it helped advance eventually made mutual aid societies less essential. As the State assumed responsibility for healthcare, pensions, and labor protection, mutuals lost their core purpose.
Today, 223 mutual aid societies operate in Chile with approximately 40,000 members. Their benefits are largely limited to death allowances and burial space. The giant that helped build modern Chile now lies dormant.
The Enduring Lesson
One lesson from mutualism has not aged: no one is coming to rescue you. Not then, not now. Mutualists understood this 130 years ago and built their own social security, contribution by contribution. They did not wait for the State or employers to act; they took action.
Today the context is different, but the principle remains. We live in a world of uncertainty, with inadequate pensions, rising healthcare costs, and persistent job instability. The collective response of mutualism is no longer available in the same way. The individual response of saving is.
Saving as an Act of Freedom
Saving is not for the wealthy. It is for anyone who understands that the future is built through present decisions. The power of compound interest—where saved money earns returns that generate further returns—works exactly the same with five thousand Chilean pesos as with five million. The only determining variable is time.
The question you should ask today is not whether you can save, but how much you can start saving now. Because the best time to start was ten years ago. The second-best time is today.

I was down in Dallas yesterday, speaking to a group of senior executives at Deloitte University. What a wonderful facility for the sharing of knowledge!
My topic was, as you might expect, a bit of a reality check on the potential role and use of AI in the corporate world. I'll have lots of great content to share over the days to come.
But suffice it to say, I don't only speak - I listen. I heard a rough idea of this phrase from one of the Deloitte executives, directly after my talk. (
I don't remember the exact words - just the idea behind the words!) He was talking to the group about how their roles and responsibilities were changing quickly in the era of fast-moving AI technologies - and his words floored me.
So many of the people I speak to about trends and tomorrow are relentlessly focused on today. They don't know how to shift the activity in their minds from the pressing moments of the current moment to the even more pressing moment of the next moment. The result is that when the future comes along - WHAM! It hits them like a ton of bricks."I didn't see that coming!" is the typical response.
Phrases like this catch my attention - they help me to frame the reality of what is going on in our world today.
It's also the type of phrase that can get you thinking. The next time you start your day with your typical list of 'to-do'items, ask yourself if you have enough on that list that has to do with tomorrow!

The interesting thing is that, being a speaker for 30+ years, you often find yourself speaking in the same conference and event centres where you've spoken before.
Such is the case with Tucson today, where I will speak at an energy and utility conference.
A few yards ago, I spoke to a few hundred cattle ranchers about the future of their industry in the same room. One of my core messages back then included details on the massive new markets that would come with globalization. My message was that they should evolve from a national focus to a global focus, and not become complacent with the effort it takes to build global market share in a vastly competitive world. Oops! If you catch the news these days, they aren't really having a very good time with things! Anyways, here's a photo pre-keynote.
But what is really interesting is that way back in January 1996, I spoke in the same facility for Nortel. Remember them - at one time, they were the world's largest telecom hardware and software provider, with a valuation in the billions. They brought me down for a business session they were running parallel to the Nortel Open, an event on the PGA tour circuit that they were sponsoring. (Mickelson won.)
My message back then was very much focused on the Internet; I found myself in an extensive number of corporate and association events, putting into perspective the impact it would have on business models, technological foundations, customer interaction, and more.
At this particular event, I put into perspective that the Internet was going to cause massive disruption for the telecom industry - the idea of long-distance would disappear, the cost for communications hardware would plummet as a result of voice-over-Internet technologies, and their business model and product line would get hammered if they didn't evolve. I pretty much suggested that the telecom industry, as they knew it, was disappearing, and they needed to adapt or die.
Word came back to me years later, the CEO, flying home on the corporate jet, fumed to his team - who invited this guy in? Didn't anyone vet the reality of his message? His predictions were too far off base, he told his team
What happened subsequently was that for a time, Nortel rode the telecom boom, selling vast amounts of hardware and software related to old infrastructure that was going out of date. And then, it died in 2002, a victim of the dot.com collapse and shrinking markets due to a massive telecom overbuild.
They didn't like my message, but boy, was I right in how things would evolve!
