One of my favorite films of last year was Lukas Dhont's CLOSE, a harrowing coming-of-age story about the things you lose as adulthood approaches. Beautifully observed, with great performances from the two young leads. Any movie about childhood experiences is necessarily mediated thru the adults who are making it. But Dhont does a great job of getting out of the way and letting genuine moments come through, without framing them inside nostalgia or adult commentary. As the clock runs out on my Netflix DVD subscription (they shut it down next month) we just mailed back YOUNG ADAM. Not streaming anywhere! 2003 feature from David Mackenzie (PERFECT SENSE, HELL OR HIGH WATER). Ewan McGregor works on a barge in Scotland, and is having an affair with Tilda Swinton, the barge captain's wife. Emily Mortimer is in this, too. Mackenzie's narrative plays with time in a cool way. Suspense, plus lots of nudity and grim-faced sex! Worth a look... if you can find it anywhere. #YabtM #films #movies #foreigncinema
