Kurz davor, wegzudösen, als mich das Piepsen des Radcomputers aufschrecken lässt und ich denke "Oh Mist, niedriger Akkustand, dabei wollte ich heute exta früh raus" – und dann realisiere ich, dass ich ja schon unterwegs war und nun mit 71 km in den Beinen bisserl komatös einen Powernap gemacht habe. #Tretroller #Footbike

Um 6:18 Uhr auf dem #Tretroller zu stehen scheint mir dann ausreichend motiviert (gewesen) zu sein. Viel Schatten in der sich um diese Zeit noch schlafend stellenden, fast noch kühlen Stadt. Kaum Verkehr, nur Fernzüge brausen am Park am Gleisdreieck vorbei, woanders weiden Kaninchen, bis sie der herannahende #Tretroller aufschrecken lässt. Durchs Brandenburger Tor und am Pariser Platz, Unter den Linden kurz pausiert. Anschließend zurück zum und auf dem Tempelhofer Feld noch einige Runden gedreht. Nach 55km war mir dann aber doch ein bisschen warm. #Footbike #Berlin

Ab 10 Uhr soll es morgen, Sonntag, also schon 29°C bekommen. Darauf kann ich gut verzichten, fragt sich nur, ob ich frühmorgens schon motiviert genug bin, um mich auf den #Tretroller zu schwingen. #Footbike

Bist du deppert, ~280 km in 14 Stunden, also Schnitt von ~20 km/h – mit (anscheinend nur kurzen) Pausen. Das schaffe ich nicht mal ohne über mehr als 4h. Tja, da müsste ich wohl mal ernsthaft trainieren, um auch "nur" halb so lange Distanzen fahren zu können.

Etwas mehr als zweieinhalb Stunden nach Start und der führende Andreas Böhm, amtierender deutscher Meister, hat bereits ~58km abgespult – ein Zehntel der Gesamtstrecke (wenn auch nicht der Höhenmeter). Also falls er sich nicht wieder verfährt und Extrakilometer sammelt wie im letzten Jahr.

Mittlerweile habe ich einen Trainingszustand erreicht, bei dem 40 km moderates Tretrollern auf dem ziemlich flachen Tempelhofer Feld bei jahrezeituntypisch kühlem aber sonst vorteilhaftem Wetter für mich erstaunlich angenehm und nicht mehr sonderlich fordernd ist, selbst mit zusätzlichem 2,5kg-Trainingsgewicht am Rücken. Soweit, so unkompliziert, viel mehr als 1–2 Trinkflaschen und ggf etwas Energienachschub braucht man ja nicht dabei zu haben.

Das ist natürlich überhaupt gar nichts gegen die Herausforderung der morgen startenden Kickdistance, dem längsten Tretrollerrennen der Welt: 587 km von Mailand nach München. Ja, das geht über den Brenner. 4000 Höhenmeter. Und das in <50 Stunden. Irre, was sich die nun 7 Teilnehmer, darunter auch zwei Frauen, vorgenommen haben. Größter Respekt davor, es überhaupt zu versuchen.

Man darf gespannt sein, ob die bei der ersten Distanzradfahrt von 1894 auf gleichlanger Strecke aufgestellte Zeit von 29:32:30 (HH:MM:SS) hier mit Tretrollern geknackt werden wird. Letztes Jahr gelang dies bei der Kickdistance 2023 auf der Strecke Wien–Berlin dem erstplatzierten Michal Veselský (CZE).

Today's #kickbike #ride was the longest I've done in a while: 55km. I rode from, through or to Rutherglen, Springhurst, Chiltern Valley, Wahgunyah and Corowa. According to my #garmin I burnt 2531 calories (10590 kilojoules), spent 27% (an hour + 5 mins) in Maximum heart zone, 50% in Threshold heart rate zone (just under 2 hours), and had an average moving speed of 15.7kph on the ride.

"Agra Fort, [was] the Mughals’ former residence when Agra was the capital of the empire, prior to its relocation to Old Delhi. It was built in the 1560s by Akbar (3rd emperor) as a military base and royal residence. The fort’s bastioned outer wall has a semi-circular shape with two entrances."

"Built by Shah Jahan over a period of 22 years, the Taj [Mahal] is a memorial to Mumtaz Mahal, his favourite wife, companion of 19 years and mother of his 14 children."

Since 3rd December, I've received the following postcards on the the_conqueror_challenges Golden Triangle virtual challenge: Truck Art & Mughal Architecture. I've also now completed 20% of the challenge.

"As India’s economy grows, trucks play a crucial role in transporting goods all over the country. Drivers spend weeks and sometimes months on the road, making the truck their home. Here they cook, eat, sleep and sometimes share the space with co-drivers. To make their nomadic life more palatable, drivers paint their trucks inside and out. No two trucks are the same. The artwork is very personal and a reflection of the driver’s personality, tastes, beliefs, values and often a reminder of home and their families."

"The magnificent Mughal architecture is attributed mainly to four successive Mughal emperors: Akbar (3rd emperor), Jahangir (4th emperor), Shah Jahan (5th emperor) and Aurangzeb (6th emperor). Vast forts, mosques and mausoleums were built within a century and even though the Mughal empire existed for 330 years and had as many as 20 emperors, very little was built after Aurangzeb. The vision of these few men left a richly detailed legacy in monuments such as the Taj Mahal, Red Fort and Agra Fort."

On 1st December 2023, I started a new The Conqueror Challenges virtual challenge: the Golden Triangle.

The challenge is 766km long. So far I have received the 3 postcards in this post, and completed 44.2km.

The Golden Triangle is a three-pointed journey through three of the most visited cities in India’s northwest. Beginning in Delhi, the challenge will take me southeast to Agra and the famous Taj Mahal, then head west to Jaipur, the pink city and finish back in Delhi. Along the journey there are ten UNESCO sites to explore, local flavours to taste, and natural and mechanical things to enjoy.

The plan is to complete the challenge by 1st March 2024 as a series of #kickbike rides.

On today's 24km #kickbike #ride I reached 10000km ridden on my Kickbike. My first on my Kickbike was on 9th August 2020. It took 3.087 years for me to ride 10000km, which calculates as an average of 3239km per year since the first ride.

Today's 52km #kickbike #Ride was between Rutherglen and Wangaratta, via Boorhaman - a bit more indirect than the other rides between Rutherglen and Wangaratta that I've done in the last few months and was about 10km longer. It was the longest Kickbike Ride I've done in the last 2 months, and possibly the longest Kickbike I've done so far this year.

Today's 44.8km #kickbike #ride started in Wodonga and passed through Barnawatha, Cornishtown, and ended in Rutherglen. Most of the ride was in a #rural setting with #farmland, and #mountains either nearby or in the distance. The weather was about perfect for cycling, about 18°C, blue skies, and a light tailwind most of the time. Roads were asphalt and gravel / dirt, with not much traffic.

I bettered the ride I did back in May between Rutherglen and Wangaratta by at least 5 minutes (probably closer to 10 minutes as today's ride was longer distance and was 5 minutes shorter), and about 1kph higher avg speed.

On the banks of Halblech River is the small village of Halblech and its 3500 residents. Described as Bavaria’s largest nature reserve, Halblech is a holiday destination year round offering activities such as hiking, cycling, skiing and cross country skiing.

Surrounded by lakes and a mountainous backdrop, Schwangau is the second last town on the Romantic Road. Due to its proximity to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle and its neighbouring Hohenschwangau Castle, Schwangau is referred to as the “village of royal castles”.

On today's 31km #kickbike #ride I reached Rottenbuch, Wildsteig, Peiting & Steingaden on @the_conqueror_challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Rottenbuch is a small village with a mere 1800 residents but its history is deeply tied to the former 11th century Augustinian monastery. When the clergy was donated property, income and land by the Duke of Bavaria in 1073, they went about building a monastery followed by a church and providing rental properties to craftsmen and employees in their service.

In the foothills of the Alps sits the village of Wildsteig. This quiet community of 1370 residents is surrounded by the Ammergau and Allgäu mountains making it a great location for hiking, Nordic walking or cross-country skiing.

A mere 1.5mi (3km) southeast of Schongau, across the River Lech is the town of Peiting. First mention of the town was in 1055AD when a castle was built on the Schlossberg (castle hill). It is one of the oldest settlements in the area. After WWII around 1,500 refugees found their home in Peiting. To remember those who perished a memorial chapel was built and inaugurated in 1987. It is the town’s hope that the memorial will remind future generations of their history and “help to build bridges of understanding from person to person, from community to community, from people to people”.

The former monastery village of Steingaden has a long history tied to Steingaden Abbey. A 12th century monastery, it was originally built in a Romanesque style. Sadly the monastery suffered throughout the centuries when it was looted and burnt during the Peasants’ War in 1525 then nearly fully destroyed during the Thirty Years’ Wars. Rebuilt in a Baroque style in the 17th century the monastery came to an end during the secularisation in 1803. With the exception of the cloisters and the abbey church the rest of the buildings were auctioned off and demolished.

On today's 14km #kickbike #ride I reached Schongau and Hohenfurch on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Located along the River Lech is the new town of Schongau. Although it is over 700 years old, the original Schongau used to be a few miles to the northeast of the current town. Sometime in the 13th century a large number of residents moved from the old Schongau and established a new settlement. When they left they took the town’s name with them.

On the banks of Schönach River sits the rural village of Hohenfurch and its 1500 residents. The village is surrounded by expansive meadows and forests and it is a holiday destination for those who enjoy a variety of activities such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and cross-country skiing to name a few. South of the village on a hill is the charming Gothic Chapel of St Ursula. Built around 1520 the chapel was dedicated to St Ursula, the patron saint of raftsmen.

On today's 21km #kickbike #ride I reached Landsberg on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge . I'm now completed over 80% of the challenge.

The picturesque town of Landsberg located on the River Lech was once a major salt route in the middle ages. In the same fashion as Friedberg it collected salt duties as a source of income and later added river taxes.

The town is a collection of pastel coloured buildings but the most impressive is the ornately decorated old town hall. Built in the 1700’s the building is three storeys high with a richly detailed stucco façade. The windows increase in size with each floor indicating the importance of the rooms behind them. The first two floors display significant paintings by Herkomer whilst the third floor is a ballroom with frescoes depicting the town’s history.

Only 8km from Augsburg is the town of Friedberg. It was founded in the mid-13th century by the Bavarian Duke Ludwig II to protect the salt route and the borders against the powerful neighbouring Augsburgers who at the time wanted their territory across the River Lech.

Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany, it is the third biggest city in Bavaria with a population of 300,000 residents (885,000 if you include the metro area) and a university town. Founded in 15BC by the Romans, it was named August Vindelicorum after Emperor Augustus. The city was home to the noble families Fugger and Welser who controlled European banking in the 16th century. The Water Management System of Augsburg became a UNESCO site in 2019.

On today's 14.4km #kickbike #ride I reached Rain on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Rain is a small town of 8,800 residents located near the River Lech. It was founded in the mid-13th century for strategic purposes. Protecting Bavaria from the northwest, Rain was also a collection point for customs from those crossing the bridge over the river.

The Battle of Rain took place in 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War. The battle was between the Swedish Protestant army and the Catholic League (a Holy Roman Empire coalition) commanded by the Count of Tilly. During the battle Tilly and his second in command were severely injured, leaving the army leaderless. The army withdrew and shortly after Tilly died from his wound. A monument commemorating Tilly was erected in 1914 in front of the Town Hall.

On today's 29km #kickbike #ride I reached Harburg & Donauwörth on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

The small medieval village of Harburg is located in the Bavarian region of Swabia. It has a population of 5,500 residents and it sits between the banks of Wörnitz River and the castle hill with Harburg Castle rising above it. Its origins date back to the 12th century when it was owned by the Hohenstaufen family, a noble dynasty that rose to rule the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages (1138-1254).

Donauwörth sites at the confluence of the Wörnitz and the Danube Rivers sits. It began as a fishing settlement around the 10th century. The old town is located on an island surrounded by Wörnitz River and connected to the rest of the city by a wooden bridge via the oldest surviving town gate known as the Riedertor. Right through the centre of the old town runs Reichstrasse, a street lined with colourful houses built over multiple levels that were once homes to the nobility.

On today's 18.5km #kickbike #ride I reached Nördlingen on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

This is a town that is as old as time or at the very least the location certainly is. The town itself was built in a crater which was a result of a meteorite striking at 43,496mi/h (70,000km/h). The diameter of the crater is 15mi (25km) wide and the town sits within its depression.

A climb to the top of St George’s Cathedral clock tower presents an aerial view of the town, the crater and the fully preserved town wall. The 15th century Cathedral was built out of rock known as suevite. This type of rock is typically formed during an impact event such as the asteroid crashing. The clock tower is 300ft (90m) tall and affectionately named “Daniel” by the locals.

In the old locomotive sheds of Nördlingen Station is the Bavarian Railway Museum and home to more than 100 railway vehicles. Nördlingen’s depot was built in 1851 and was used by steam locomotives until 1966 when they were replaced by diesel locomotives and rail buses. In 1985 the depot was adapted to a museum.

On today's 21.5km #kickbike #ride I reached Wallerstein on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Wallerstein came into existence in 1238 when it was initially known as Steinheim. Originally owned by Emperor Barbarossa, ownership was transferred to the House of Oettingen in 1250. The Oettingens developed and brought prosperity to the town until they lost their independence in 1806 and the town was enveloped into Bavaria.

On today's 14.2km #kickbike #ride I reached Dinkelsbühl & passed the 40% completed mark of The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Dinkelsbühl remains one of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany. The town is surrounded by a complete fortified wall with 16 towers and four fully preserved tower gates.

Inside the town wall is the 15th century Gothic hall church with a 13th century tower portal leading to an interior of 22 pillars supporting a vaulted roof. The Neo-Gothic high altar with a shrine circa 1490 is flanked by highly decorated side altars dating from the early 1500s. On display is a tablet from 1520 depicting the ten commandments and a walk up the tower presents the visitor with a view over the town.

On today's 9.3km #kickbike #ride I reached Schillingsfürst on @the_conqueror_challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge . Nestled amongst Frankenhöhe Nature Park, the small town of Schillingsfürst has a population of just under 3,000 residents. The 425mi² (1,100 km²) nature park is a mix of forests, streams, vineyards and protected areas. Because of its geographical location, the park is one of the sunniest spots in Germany.

The town’s landmark site is Schillingsfürst’s Castle located on a mountain spur of the nature park. The castle has been through several rebuilds through the centuries having been destroyed in 1316, 1525 and 1632. The current castle with its Baroque architecture was built by Prince Karl Albrecht in 1753 and it took 40 years to complete. The castle ownership moved to Prince Chlodwig Karl Viktor in the 1800s and has remained in the family since.

On today's 9.4km #kickbike #ride I reached Bad Mergentheim on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge. I have also now completed more than 20% of the challenge's distance.

Officially recognised as a spa town since 1926, Bad Mergentheim is a one stop-shop for relaxation and rejuvenation. As one of the largest health resorts in the state of Baden-Württemberg, the town receives more than 100,000 visitors each year.

The stunning Spa Park is an outdoor oasis of peace and tranquility amongst greenery, exotic and native trees, and beds of vibrant floral displays. You can listen to the sounds of tweeting birds or observe the perfectly choreographed dancing water move to a piece of music at the fountains. Even better to see it at night when the coloured lights are on adding another layer to the routine. Small waterfalls, a granite arched bridge and exotic plants make up the Japanese garden offering calmness and balance or a colourful feast of blooming roses can be experienced in the Rose Garden with its collection of 30 different varieties.

During the Middle Ages, Bad Mergentheim was headquarters to the Teutonic Order. Their purpose was to help Christians on the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and to build hospitals. Referred to as Teutonic Knights, the military order was made up of both volunteers and mercenaries. Mergentheim Palace is the town’s landmark building and was the home base of the Teutonic Order until 1809. Built in the 12th century it was expanded several times for the next 800 years. Dominated by the palace church, the interior is a work of art featuring elaborate ceiling frescoes, whilst the crypt below the church is the burial site of the order’s grand masters. Today the palace is a museum exhibiting the Order’s history.

Today's 10km #kickbike #ride brought me through Lauda-Königshofen on The Conqueror Challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

Lauda and Königshofen are two neighbouring towns known for their hillside vineyards on either side of the Tauber Valley. The diversity of grapes in the area produce a wide variety of red and white wines. Depending on your palate, in the white wine range there’s the Bacchus with its strong bouquet, the Gewürtztraminer that may be anywhere from sweet to dry or Silvaner with its full-bodied pear flavour. If red is more to your liking how about a black Riesling with its ruby red color and velvety aroma but not too strong a flavour; or maybe a more modern grape, the Acolon. Created in 1971, the Acolon has a terrific, intense colour but the grape was only officially recognised thirty years later. Now well established it is a complimentary wine to a meat based dish or a platter of hard cheese.

Lauda-Königshofen is not a tourist destination, just more of an overnight stopover unless of course you want to sample the various vineyards in the area. However, when the Königshöfer Messe, a folk festival, comes to town, the area attracts more than 150,000 visitors. This 10 days festival has been running for over 500 years offering music, culinary specialties, a running race with various categories, amusement park and trade fair.

Half-timbered houses, museums, historical stone bridges or a stroll along the Tauber river may be a more preferred option for a quieter experience. Several churches date back to 18th century, whilst many of the half-timbered houses date back to as early as the 16th century.

Today's 18.4km #kickbike #ride brought me to Wertheim on the @the_conqueror_challenges Romantic Road virtual #challenge .

On the confluence of rivers Main and Tauber lies the town of Wertheim. Founded between the 7th-8th century, Wertheim has a population of 23,000 residents. The town’s landmark is Wertheim Castle and its medieval town centre.

Today, 1st June, I started my next @the_conqueror_challenges #challenge - The Romantic Road.

Germany’s most scenic route begins on the River Main and ends in the foothills of the Alps. Winding its way through medieval villages and Bavarian towns the route endearingly called “Romantic Road” evokes images of castles, half-timbered homes, cobblestoned alleys, warm and hearty culinary delights, art, culture and a long history.

Travelling through 29 towns, the journey begins in the city of Würzburg. With a population of 130,000 residents, the city spans the banks of the River Main, showcasing lavish baroque and rococo architecture.
