Russell Martin: From Swansea rebuild to Oxford favourite
Martin, who managed Swansea City between 2021 and 2023, is now tipped to make a rapid return to management after a turbulent spell north of the border.
During his two seasons at the Swansea.com Stadium, Martin oversaw a full‑scale stylistic rebuild, implementing his trademark possession‑heavy approach. His tenure produced eye‑catching football at times — including a late surge in the 2022/23 season — but also inconsistency and defensive frailty that frustrated supporters.
He left SA1 in the summer of 2023 to join Southampton, then in the Premier League, before taking charge at Rangers. That move lasted just four months, ending after what Scottish media described as a disastrous start to the season.
Now, with Oxford United sitting in the relegation zone and searching for a reset, Martin has emerged as the leading candidate to take over at the Kassam Stadium.
Alan Sheehan: Former Swans boss also in contention
Also in the running is Alan Sheehan, who had a short and bruising spell in charge of Swansea earlier this season.
Sheehan was appointed in February 2025 and guided the club to safety last season, but his second campaign unravelled quickly. A 4–1 defeat to Ipswich Town left Swansea 21st in the Championship, and he was sacked three days later.
Despite that, Sheehan remains highly regarded in coaching circles and has already held talks with Oxford United, according to reports in Oxfordshire. The club are said to be keen to speak to him formally as they weigh up their options.

Für den FM25 wurde die Revolution versprochen, er wurde verlegt, dann gecancelt, wegen Qualitätsbedenken. Und auch der FM26 wirkt Monate nach Release immer noch sehr unpoliert. Das UI ist Geschmackssache, aber faktisch braucht man mehr Klicks. Viele Menüs sind nicht fertig, falsche oder gar keine Informationen werden in den Kacheln angezeigt. Insgesamt verbreitet der FM26 bei mir noch keinen Langzeitspaß, ich empfehle weiterhin den #FootballManager 24.

After winning my fourth title in a row and first double, I think it might be time for a little #footballmanager break? Starting to rebuild and get rid of those "homegrown heroes" is a bit painful and the seasons are very like each other. The "money sack" teams are stockpiling players from abroad, but cannot use them due to league restrictions. So they have three or four local players on the pitch and get beaten easily ;)

BetVictor’s latest odds put Monk at 8/1, alongside Steve Bruce, Neil McDonald and Mike Williamson. For Swans fans, the name jumps off the page: Monk isn’t just another candidate, he’s a club legend who captained City from the lower leagues all the way to Wembley glory.
Monk’s Swansea story
Monk first arrived at the Vetch in 2004, when Swansea were scrapping in League Two. A no‑nonsense centre‑half, he quickly became a dressing‑room leader and was handed the captain’s armband. Under his watch, Swansea climbed the divisions, winning the League One title in 2008 and establishing themselves in the Championship.
He was on the pitch at Wembley in 2011 when Swansea beat Reading in the play‑off final to reach the Premier League for the first time. Two years later, he was lifting silverware — sharing the honour with Ashley Williams as Swansea stunned Bradford to win the 2013 League Cup, the club’s first major trophy in its 100‑year history.

His first game in charge was the South Wales derby — and he delivered in style, beating Cardiff 3–0. That summer he was confirmed as permanent boss, ending his playing career.
The 2014‑15 season was his high point as manager. Swansea stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening day, then went on to complete doubles over both United and Arsenal. Monk’s side finished 8th in the Premier League with a record points tally, earning him the Manager of the Month award in August.
His reign ended in December 2015 after a poor run, but by then he had clocked up 12 years of service to Swansea City — a decade as captain and two years as manager.

After leaving Swansea, Monk’s managerial journey took him through Birmingham City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday before landing at Cambridge United in March 2024. He signed a two‑year deal and was unveiled with the club’s scarf around his shoulders, tasked with steadying the ship in League One.
His spell lasted just under a year. By February 2025, Cambridge were rooted to the bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety, and the club parted ways with him after a poor run of results. In total, Monk managed nine wins during his tenure.
Although brief, the stint kept him connected to the dugout and demonstrated his willingness to take on challenges outside the top flight. That Cambridge link adds another layer of intrigue to his name appearing in the betting for Barrow’s vacancy.

Leading the market for the Barrow vacancy is Steve Evans at 5/1, with Simon Grayson, David Unsworth and John Brady all priced at 10/1. Former Wales boss Rob Page is a 20/1 outsider, while ex‑Swans manager Russell Martin is listed at 25/1.

#FootballManager is a nice #gaming story. Got to know the game back in 2000 (!) when studying in #Norway - so I brought it back home and spread it in Germany as well.
I'm not the type to buy the newest version every year, so the last version I have is the 2014 one. Started a game with my beloved Norwegian lower league club and didn't play for five years or so. Recently I rediscovered the save and play it on my Linux computer. And won a highest level league title for the first time ever :)
