Getting time to harvest my first crop! - Posted to Olio app for food give away / food swap.

Olio isn't as active here in the states, but it works really well for peer-to-peer food swapping!

If no one snags this within the week, I'll donate them to the local food bank.

Note: Coming up on the final updates for this specific thread (I'll add another post or two on lessons learned and take a final picture at six weeks).

I'm going to try to replace rockwool with hydroponic cups filled with dirt. I'll line the cup with a papertowel to hold in the dirt. Thinking about using really tiny 1-inch cups.

The rockwool cubes are 6 cents a piece..... but I think I can get that down a half cent, or a quarter cent, or less, per plant.

It'll also make it easier to give the plant away. Right now I have to harvest ABOVE the rockwool, but that severs it from its root base. So the leafs go bad quicker.

If I could just wash off the tiny bit of dirt, cut the shorts short, and harvest the whole plant that way, I could give it away easier and in tact.

Alright. Have my next experiment!

At the Fawkner #FoodSwap I brought along my homemade Cumquatcello for people to taste. Ingredients: 37% alcohol/vol Gin, two cups of sugar and cumquat peel that had soaked together for 5 months before filtering. Appreciative remarks.

North Coburg Food swap today. The home made fruit liqueurs tasting that I brought along was a roaring success. Only one glass was smashed (and that was by a non-drinker)

Fruit liqueurs included:

🍷Plum Shrub (Home grown Mariposa plums, rum, lemon)
🍷Apricot Ratafia (homegrown apricots, brandy, spices)

When I see @schoolstrikeforclimate kids studying on the steps of parliament in protest, and @extinctionrebellion taking over cities with music, theatre, workshops and family friendly activities, Regenerative Disobedience is the phrase that comes to mind. It describes those actions that aren't strictly legal, but which have so many benefits alongside the implied climate message that we would do them anyway. These actions can be home scale, like having water tanks, chickens, raw milk and compost toilets in councils where these things are still illegal. They can be community scale, like reclaiming the common land and trading things and services outside the monetary economy. They can also be city-scale, like the bike collective I stayed with in Mexico that went out in high vis vests and painted their own bike lanes to make riding safer in the city for everyone.
