  16. How to Store #Cabbage So It Stays Crisp for Weeks, According to Culinary Pros

The best methods for storing whole, cut, or pre-cut cabbage.

    Updated on February 24, 2026

"From crunchy coleslaws to hearty soups, there are so many classic dishes that rely on cabbage. But first, you need to know how to store cabbage if you want to get the most out of this modest vegetable. How do you keep it from wilting and browning—and can you freeze it for long-term storage? To find out, we spoke to culinary professionals to learn how to store cabbage the right way.

How to Store Cabbage in the Refrigerator

Whether whole or cut, cabbage should always be stored in the refrigerator.

For the best results, store cabbage in the crisp drawer of your refrigerator, which is designed to maintain humidity and keep vegetables fresh longer.

    Whole Cabbage

Whole, uncut cabbage should be kept in an airtight container or large plastic bag in the refrigerator. Storing it inside a container or bag will help retain its moisture, says Mike Makuch, M.A.T., CEC, associate professor of culinary arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.

How long whole cabbage lasts: When stored properly, cabbage can last a long time in the fridge, up to two months, says Makuch. But for the best quality, he says to use it within a month.

    Cut Cabbage

After cutting a cabbage, store it in an airtight container or bag. Place it in the coldest part of your fridge—avoid storing it on the door, where temperatures tend to fluctuate the most, says Makuch.

Cut cabbage should be used or cooked within three days according to Makuch.

    Can You Freeze Cabbage?

While it's possible to freeze cabbage and keep it for longer, there are some things to keep in mind.

First, frozen cabbage should only be used for cooked preparations, such as soups and stews. That's because cabbage loses its crunch when it's frozen and thawed, making it less ideal for raw recipes like coleslaw or salads.

It's also important to blanch cabbage before freezing it. 'Blanching will deactivate enzymes [that] cause flavor loss and texture degradation,' explains Makuch. It also helps retain the color of the cabbage while eliminating any surface bacteria before storage, he adds."

  21. @MaQuest So, we have an abundance of locally-grown red and green organic cabbage (two decent-sized heads). I'll be posting recipes and storage tips tomorrow. I even found a Vegetarian Red Flannel hash recipe! And yeah, I did attempt to grow my own red cabbage, but the heads are very small because of the drought and heat. I'll still find a use for them (maybe let two of them go to seed).

  26. 😱 UK Environment Minister: Stock up on food to prepare for #ExtremeWeather

    Archie Mitchell, 4 Sept 2026

"Households should stock up on food to prepare for extreme weather as the strongest #ElNiño event in a generation develops over the Pacific Ocean, a government minister has said.

"Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle told the Guardian the powerful natural climate phenomenon will lead to 'more extreme storms in this country'.

"Her comments came as the National Audit Office (NAO) warned #Britain 's food supply chain is at risk given the growing threat of #CyberAttacks and the #ClimateCrisis.

"The NAO said the government was too reliant on the private sector to deal with food supply disruption. The government is due to unveil a strategy about preparing for #NationalEmergencies later this year.

"Dame Angela said: 'We're about to experience probably the largest El Niño that has ever been seen, and that will lead to drier summers, wetter winters, with more extreme storms in this country.

" 'It will do a lot more damage in Asia with #flooding, and therefore I think that we need to take it seriously.

" 'If you've got a store of a bit of food that can keep you going for a while before the emergency services can get to you, you're going to be a lot better off than if you haven't.

" 'So some of it is that kind of preparation for just being a bit more #resilient.'

"Her comments came as an #NAO report warned Britain's food supply chain is vulnerable to plant or human disease outbreaks, cyber-attacks and extreme weather.

"It also cited #ClimateChange as a longer-term chronic risk which could leave Britain's food supply at risk.

"The disruptions could push up prices and leave vulnerable people struggling to buy food, it said.

"The NAO said the Department for Food, the Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) was too reliant on private companies to handle disruptions to food supply.

"It added the department had not done enough in recent years to improve supply chain resilience.

"UK households are less prepared for emergencies than those in several other countries such as #Finland, #Sweden and European Union nations, the NAO added."
