I harvested some more #GreenOnions from our backyard.
2025 marks the 30th year since I bought green onions in any store. Been growing it, year round, since 1995.

I highly recommend this melon variety to fellow #FoodGardeners & #FruitGrowers on #VancouverIsland / #PacificNorthwest regions ❤️✌️
To help me get through winter, I started growing a tomato plant like a house plant. Today, I grabbed the first tomato! 🍅
It’s certainly not high-producing(this was the only tomato ready), but I wasn’t even sure if it would get enough energy to produce any at all, so I am taking this as a win.

Got onions?
In late summer I always plant Walla Walla onion seed in our unheated mini greenhouse. There were several times this past winter when temps went down to the mid teens.
Yesterday I moved those onion plants those into one of our raised beds. If the forecast is for frost then I have a piece of 2-mil plastic I will drape over the bed on a temporary support system. These will be our first onions sometime this summer.
Also yesterday I planted 3 kinds of storage onion and more Walla Walla in the greenhouse. Some of this seed is from 2023 so if it does not germinate well then I will replant with 2024 seed.

Got coffin lids?
Recently I bought a tray of spinach starts and there were too many to plant in our mini greenhouse so the rest of them went into a raised bed. Then I got a coffin lid out of storage to put over the bed at night since here in the #PNW it can still freeze.
2x2 frame + concrete re-mesh wire + UV resistant plastic
Old garden hose was split lengthwise and put over the end of the wire to keep it from eating the plastic.
We have 2 cofffin lids and we made one a bit shorter so they kinda stack for storage.

Get ready. Get set. Start #gardening.
If you live in the greater Seattle area you likely know about McLendon Hardware stores. Yesterday I found early transplants at the Woodinville store and got some spinach and lettuce to plant in our mini-greenhouse.
Actually I planted spinach seed last fall to overwinter except some critter got in there and ate the plants - roots and all! 😟
At least that critter left the Walla Walla onions alone. They will get transplanted into another part of the garden in a few weeks.

Got spinach?
It is my turn to cook tonight so the menu will include some tasty fall spinach from our mini greenhouse. These plants will survive temps into the teens and produce our first garden-fresh produce next March.
Also in the pic are some Walla Walla onions. Next spring I will transplant these into a different part of the garden and they will be our first onions.
At the other end of the same greenhouse bed are hardy lettuce varieties to overwinter. But it looks like I planted too soon so I plan to plant more lettuce in the other greenhouse bed. Meanwhile, we have all the succulent tender lettuce we can eat.

Pole bean revival.
In early September it looked like our garden pole beans were done producing for the year. Turns out they were just taking a bit of a break. The daily yield is way down but it is still more than we can keep up with eating fresh. The plants are really beat up since I have been pawing through the leaves picking beans all season. But as long as the plants are producing, I will let them keep going.

We grew 3 potato varieties this year. Just harvested the German Butterball - one of the best tasting large potatoes IMHO. They now go on slatted shelves in a dark part of our barn so the skins can dry. Then the dirt gets brushed off and they get stored in a set of old file drawers in our unheated garage. I drilled a bunch of small holes in the sides of the file for air circulation.

Got beans?
File this under gardening lessons learned.
We had an early warm spring and so I took advantage by planting the pole bean crop earlier than normal. We had a great harvest, froze 10 quarts and shared with friends and local food bank.
But now the plants are almost done producing. Usually we have fresh beans later than this. Next year I plan to plant half the crop ASAP and then wait 2-3 weeks before planting the rest.

Sweet corn and cantaloupe will be ready soon.

I really should remember to use a larger container when I do the daily pole bean harvest. Tomorrow the local food bank will get another delivery of various fresh top quality organic vegies. And of course a good supply of these will get tucked away in our chest freezer.

#Blueberry jailbreak!
No, the blueberries did not tunnel out. Instead, the dang Juncos tunneled in under the wire!
Juncos are ground birds and the scratch with their feet foraging for food. A couple of days ago I let a Junco out of the jail and carefully inspected for holes in the net and tunnels. This morning there was a Junco (same one?) in the jail and, yup, a new bird tunnel.
I have now armored the ground outside the wire. #Gardening #Gardens #FoodGardeners #FarmersEatFirst #PNW
I was out picking pole beans this evening and thought I should check on the pepper plants in our mini greenhouse. Whoa - that is easily the largest green paper I have grown. And we have always gardened organically. BTW, when I buy gloves I get the extra large size.

It is my turn to cook tonight and the menu includes roast chicken with garden-fresh potatoes and beans.
We have tried a lot of potato varieties and I think these ‘Cerisa’ are the best tasting red ones.
There are 4 kinds of pole beans in the garden. Harvest has just started and the yellow wax beans on the pole closest to the back of the garage are producing first. That pole gets reflected light and heat from the garage wall. #Gardening #Gardens #FoodGardeners #FarmersEatFirst #PNW
It was my turn to cook tonight and I was doing chef’s salad. One ingredient I wanted to have was some chopped green pepper. I had previously used the last part of one we had in the fridge in a breakfast dish so I went out to our mini greenhouse to see what I could find.
Actually I picked to first green pepper of the season about 10 days ago.

#Garden sunrise.
Pole beans are up over the top of their poles. Sweet corn is thigh high. 7 quarts of blueberries in the freezer and *lots* more on the bushes. And it will be months before we need to buy any potatoes, onions, garlic, lettuce...

#Gardening tip. 30% strength vinegar is a dandy weed killer. Home Depot used to sell it in gallon jugs - not sure if they still do. Last time we ordered a 4-pack online.
Use it full strength. We spot spray using a “chemical resistant” spray bottle. If you use it on weeds in your lawn it will also kill the grass but the grass will grow back. Works fast and just a bit of spray will zap a weed.

Harvested the first potatoes of the season yesterday and had a flashback to being a kid visiting grandfather Max on his Minnesota farm and helping him get potatoes from his garden. Max laid them out in the grass by the house and washed them off with a hose.

Our #garden has a #blueberry jail. So far, no blueberries have escaped.
The 9 metal ‘T’ posts are permanent. PVC ‘risers’ are glued together. Horizontal pipes at the top slip into fittings and blue twine holds things together. Around the bottom is chew-proof plastic fencing. The far wall is a separate piece and folds back at one corner for a door.
I froze 12 quarts last year and also had plenty to share with neighbors and friends. #Gardening #FoodGardeners #VegetableGarden
Our #garden includes a low cost DIY miniature greenhouse. The key part of this design is using concrete reinforcing wire (‘remesh’) to hold up the plastic roof. Concrete supply shops sell it by the running foot. We also used UV resistant plastic.
We overwinter spinach, Walla Walla onions and hardy lettuce varieties. Carrots I planted early this year are ready and it will produce our first tomatoes and peppers.

Garden sunrise.
We have the good fortune of being able to grow a great deal of the food that we eat. I used to have a cap that said “Farmers Eat First”.
So far this year we have harvested lots of early spinach and lettuce. The first ripe strawberries have been picked and the next time we need an onion we can grab the first Walla Walla sweet onion. Later this month the earliest potatoes will show up in a meal.
