This is a great article about Unity Gardens, a massive #CommunityGarden project in the town where I was raised. They have over 40 gardens throughout town that are open to anyone to ensure the free fresh fruits and veggies are available for all. They also have an orchard and an apiary. Everything is volunteer run and welcoming. I would like to see this idea spread!

#Georgia [USA] - ‘Without Walls’ Farmers Market makes debut in #GardenCityGA
By Brontë Sorotsky
Published: Jul. 26, 2025GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WTOC) - "A new initiative to help #LowerIncome families buy #HealthyFood and make smart choices kicked off Saturday in Garden City.
" '#FeedTheHungry' is meeting people where they’re at to make the community as a whole healthier.
"From #okra to #nectarines, a new farmer’s market in Garden City has no shortage of healthy options. The idea for this farmer’s market came from a lack of resources when it comes to fresh foods.
" 'Trying to address #FoodDeserts in this community. And what does a #FoodDesert mean? That means limited access to fresh food,' said Charice Stroud, a volunteer with Feed the Hungry.
"Stroud is working alongside state representative Carl Gilliard to increase that access with the start of the first '#WithoutWalls' #FarmersMarket.
"On Saturday, this new farmer market kicked off with #pickling demonstrations, fresh juice making, farmer’s selling #LocalProduce, and more.
" 'It builds a healthier community, right? That’s our overall goal,' Stroud explained.
"Feed the hungry is partnering with #AgraUnity, a coalition of #BlackFarmers that focuses on supplying the food deserts In #WestChathamCounty.
"Those local farmers will be selling their products, allowing people in the community to access farm to table food at a more affordable price.
" 'We want to empower people. And a part of that is your health, what you’re consuming each and every day. So, you can come in and get some good ideas for what to bring back to your home and your family,' Stroud said.
"The 'Without Walls' Farmers Market will be held every 4th Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4704 Augusta Road in Garden City."

#ChicagoHeights '#ZFarm' helping #UrbanGrowersCollective battle #FoodInsecurity
'We're encouraging everybody to join us to grow 10% of your own food'
By Cheryl Scott and Blanca Rios, Thursday, June 19, 2025
CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- "Protecting the planet can start with the food you put on the table.
" 'Just thinking about how many miles it took for that tomato to come to your plate and all the energy that is consumed along the way for that tomato, that in the end, doesn't really taste that good,' said Ericka Allen.
"Allen is the CEO of Urban Growers Collective. The Black and women-led nonprofit helps to provide locally-grown food to the South and West sides of the city, through its seven urban farms.
"But #UGC's footprint just got a whole lot bigger after acquiring access to a 42-acre farm in south suburban Chicago Heights. About 30 of those acres are arable land, said Allen.
" 'This is a farm that we're calling Z-farm, formerly the Zeldenrust Farm,' said Allen. 'Now we can spread out here and grow so much more food and also create more food security, with food coming back into the city. So we're not relying on having to ship food from across the country.'
"One seed at a time, UGC will start growing everything from collard greens to pumpkins on just five of Z-farm's acres for the first couple of years. The rest of the land will be covered with black-seeded sunflowers come harvest time.
"And for the first time, they now have access to heated hoop houses.
" 'For us to have a little bit of heat means we can extend those tomatoes all the way through Christmas, all the way into the new year. That means that we can start peas in January,' said Allen.
"UGC is also making sure future generations learn to grow their own food.
" 'We're teaching, basic skills. Transplanting to seeding, to harvesting, and eventually going to sell it to the community,' said Urban Growers Collective Director of Farming Malcolm Evans.
"Evans, a Chicago native, trains interns, staffers, and community members, some who don't have easy access to grocery stores.
" 'A lot of these are #FoodDesert neighborhoods,' said Evans. 'A lot of these communities don't have access to healthy foods and don't have food affordable to them so they have to travel miles away.'
"But UGC is hoping to change that narrative.
" 'We're encouraging everybody to join us to grow 10% of your own food, to purchase 10% of your own food, to make a positive impact on #ClimateChange, and just to have a more secure food shed.'
"Even if that means getting a little extra help from a neighbor.
" 'If somebody's growing a ton of zucchini down the street and they want to give you some zucchini, take that zucchini, make five things out of it. That's #FoodSecurity,' said Allen.
"Aspiring gardeners can stop by the Z-Farm's onsite nursery every weekend to purchase seedlings to grow at home.
"And come harvest time, people can drive up to the curbside farmstand to purchase vegetables."

George Barrell Cheever, a Congregationalist & Presbyterian minster, argues against slavery. God has uniformly spoken against oppression (Malachi 3:5, Ps 119:134). The claim of property in people is the sum of all these oppressions.
Today, some try to rehabilitate the reputation of slavery, to forbid teaching its history.
How can you protect the stranger, fatherless, widows, the servant, and hireling? Any one particularly at risk today?

#MiddletownCT residents rally to save 25-year-old #CommunityGarden from becoming a development
Story by Cassandra Day, March 12, 2025
"About two dozen people are encouraging the city to purchase the North End Ferry Street community garden as an alternative to the property owner selling it for development.
The garden, first established in 1999, has not only been a place for people to learn to grow and maintain a plot, but offers educational opportunities for residents, including youth.
"A number of people spoke out during a recent Economic Development Committee meeting about its vital importance to this 'underserved' area of Middletown. Fifteen people emailed the city on the matter, all signing their names to the same letter appealing to the committee.
"The #FerryStreetGarden has 'undergone several periods of disinvestment in the last few years,' the letter said, and now faces the 'ultimate threat of impending development.'
"The Chrysalis Center Real Estate Corp., which owns the land, has received offers from entities to purchase the plot, but nothing in writing, according to CEO Sharon Castelli.
"She is willing to negotiate a price with the city so residents can use the property, Castelli added.
"'We are very community-minded and have housing in the area, so having a place for people to grow vegetables would be a great use,' she said.
"The city would need about $50,000 to buy the land, the letter said, and there is an opportunity to apply for a state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Urban Green and Community Garden grant for the project.
"Wesleyan University student Rowan Roudebush, who created a short video about the garden, has maintained a plot there for about a year.
"'Kids have been learning to grow food and have been building community through that garden for decades,' said Roudebush, who spoke about the North End being considered a '#FoodDesert.'"
"'It's in an area where, if you don't have access to a car, it's near impossible to get affordable groceries,' they added."

Handley Carr Glyn Moule, Anglican bishop, says slavery could not survive alongside the religion of Jesus Christ. At the same time, it wasn’t job of religion to start a servile war.
Conservatives have insisted on the latter, and then built a case for the opposite of the former.
Does Moule dismiss case that Church should have done more? My point is that the proclamation has always been there. That is what this blog is here to celebrate.

#UrbanFoodForest at #BrownsMill - #AgAtlanta
"This site is #Atlanta's first Community Urban #FoodForest, as well as a new model for a City of Atlanta park. The food forest will produce a wide variety of fresh, flavorful, and healthy nuts, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms, which will become available for public consumption. Located in an area identified as a #FoodDesert, the site was a working farm as recently as 2000. Neighbors still talk about the land’s former owners, Ruby and Willie Morgan, who left excess produce from their farm on fence posts for neighbors to claim and enjoy."

Bishop Basil, noted for defending orthodoxy against Arianism, preaches on Psalm 14. Not the part about “fool says no God”, but the part about oppressing the poor. He sees merchants hope for misery so they can make more profit in exploitation of need. He says they lose more by sin than their profit.
Is such active sin ever going on today? Are such fools w/o a teacher any more?
How can you look at how you profit?

"In 1939, more than $200 million worth of vegetables were grown in 4.8 million farm home gardens... In 1944, 18.5 million gardeners took part in Victory Gardens, supplying 40% of the nation’s fresh vegetables."
The American people, through mutual aid and cooperative action, developed a genius plan to not only ensure the supply of resources to the war effort but to enhance the health, well-being, and solidarity of the population.
Whether we acknowledge it or not, our lives are being invaded and occupied by massive systems that produce our food, destroying our health and the health of the environment. It's war time, but this time, the goal is to claim the resources taken over by the mass, factory agriculture system and bring them back into local control. The Victory Garden revolution is the solution to bring sovereignty back to the people.

This area hosts one of the highest concentrations of low-income housing in the City of Bloomington, making the store’s closure even more impactful on the vulnerable population it served."

I live near the kind of small town where the hot food deli at the Sinclair gas station advertises on Facebook that you better get down there right away if you want some of their every-Wednesday beef and potato stew because it always sells out so quick.
And I'm thinking there's literally nothing easier to make at home than a big pot of stew. It's just not a thing I can imagine buying at a gas station. #Rural #Food #FoodDesert #Foodie #Stew #BeefStew

Steve & Ben spend a day a week knocking doors on their estate offering to plant free fruit trees in folks' gardens. Today, they are out with fruit bushes looking for new homes.
They've had a brilliant response, and it's opened up many wonderful connections and conversations about traditional food crops amongst their diverse community.
Residents will have fresh fruit on their doorstep at zero cost. The group also offer workshops in thrifty growing and caring for fruit trees.
It's a direct response to the #costoflivingcrisis that also improves climate & biodiversity.
Here's what Steve says: "The most direct way of addressing food poverty is getting together with friends, family and community and growing it. It's surprisingly easy, it starts with a conversation over a brew. Be that person who puts the kettle on and invites folk round." ❤️
Delighted we could support Community Roots Permaculture Project with a Transition Together seed-funding grant, supported by @tnlcommunityfund.
