Sustainable smaller farming organization and networks instead of conglomerate vertical monopolies offer sound and safe food supply not vulnerable to crisis management. We already know this. Thanks to Iran’s defense forces for demonstrating these insights in 2026.

  4. "Expect fuel surcharges until oil prices drop.... Fresh produce, which relies heavily on truck transportation, is particularly affected by diesel fuel inflation. Elevated transportation costs are contributing to higher delivered costs for fresh fruits and vegetables....Diesel represents roughly 20–25% of total trucking cost per mile, making carriers highly sensitive to fuel spikes. Prices are expected to remain elevated until meaningful normalization of global oil flow occurs, with no near‑term relief expected....Temporary fuel surcharges are in effect on most items and transportation lanes until oil prices ease." 5. NHK: Price surges caused by Iran conflict hit daily life in Japan

"...Agriculture ministry figures show international prices of urea, a key ingredient of fertilizers, rose more than 50 percent in March from February. About 40 percent of global urea exports come from the Middle East...."

  6. CW: Energy requirements in NZ

My two bobs worth on the road that we all travel.

An LNG terminal has GOT to be off the table.
Diesel supply has to be top of our fuel requirements .Priority given to farmers and transport companies.
All viable alternatives to fossil fuel need to be considered and built at pace.( except of course Nuclear.) Solar, wind, geothermal, hydro. Includes Energy storage systems. Government investment vs loans to private enterprise.
    Public transport to be expanded.
Our rail network electrified. Railway investment in railcars for short travel and Intercity passenger trains for longer routes. Government subsidised if necessary.

    Better Government.

  7. WSJ: The Iran War’s Other Energy Shortage—Food

"...The Iran war will constrain the supply not only of oil and gas but of food. Two shocks hit the global food system following American and Israeli attacks on Iran, but only one was widely reported. First, the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed beginning Feb. 28, day one of the war. Second, on March 18, Iranian missiles struck Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. In both cases, media coverage has focused on petroleum prices. That framing is dangerously incomplete.

The two events compound each other’s effect on the global food supply. ..."

  8. Lots of conversations recently about planting more veg this year to donate, like Plant a Row for the Hungry, as prices rise and the economy goes to 💩, etc.

What vegetables would you focus on for this?

  9. from The Humanist Report:

"Farmer Kowalski (aka @PrairieFireNeb) joins the show to talk about a lesser discussed consequence of Trump’s illegal war with Iran: the near-inevitable surge in grocery prices. Additionally, Kowalski explains how devastating Tehran’s black rain will be on Iran’s agriculture for years to come."

  10. The Guardian: ‘A big burden for farmers’: Gulf shipping crisis threatens food price shock

Iranian blockade of the strategic strait of Hormuz is hitting global fertiliser supply chain

"...Between a quarter and a third of the global trade in the raw materials for fertiliser passes through the strait, as well as a fifth of seaborne crude oil and gas.

The de facto closure of the strait is affecting the transport of ammonia and nitrogen, which are key ingredients in many synthetic fertiliser products...."

  13. How extreme weather events affect agricultural trade between US states

The U.S. is largely self-sufficient in agricultural food production, supported by a well-developed storage and interstate trade system. However, extreme weather events put increasing pressure on agriculture, potentially impacting the country's ability to provide food for its growing population and underscoring the importance of maintaining a resilient food supply chain.

  14. "With over 40% of American farm workers lacking legal status, people who used to do the heavy lifting are now staying home in fear while crops rot in the fields."

Deliberately choosing to decimate your labor force, labor desperately needed to put food on your table, for the cheap, evanescent thrill of demonstrating domination over those you consider less than yourself, is not just stupid: it's suicidal.

  15. "Setting aside perceptions, foreign leaders are aware, even if Trump is not, that his anti-immigrant push has hurt global and local economies.

In the US, no sector has been hurt more by Trump’s anti-immigration push than farmers. American farmers today say their #1 challenge isn’t the weather, equipment costs, or even the mortgage- it’s finding enough labor."
