1960s : The term officially entered #computer culture through the Tech Model Railroad Club (#TMRC) at #MIT. The students, who were among the world's first computer hackers, combined the existing #nonsense word "foo" with the military slang "#FUBAR" to create "#foobar". They split it into two separate placeholder names — foo and bar — to represent generic components, variables, or functions.

Mal wieder ein Notebook mit #Foobar2000 und #Linux in Händen. Also #Foobar (2.24.5) tut auch hier unter einem #Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS seinen Dienst (und schiebt ganz wunderbar High-res-Webradio-Klänge übers Netzwerk auf einen Pioneer- Streamer). Meine Ohren freuen sich!

@ma3ke I guess its part of the way new languages always make it into the programmer zeitgeist:
Step 1: "I'm never going to bother to learn to use #foobar language, it does nothing I can't do already."
Step 2: "Actually, there are a few edge cases where a few lines of #foobar are more elegant than my usual programming language."
Step 3: "You know, once you get used to #foobar's way of working, it is really very elegant."
Step 4: Profit! (For authors of #foobar tutorial books, at least...)

*key (+ firefish) hashtags are odd, they can have delimiters in them, but only if the delimiters are closed, and specifically forbids certain delimiters??

allowed:

Anyone have good alternatives for #roon ?

I’ve had a subscription with them for 6 years now. Kinda getting tired of the cost:benefit ratio.

What I do like: Metadata, organization of the library contents, decent UI, mobile app support (Roon more than ARC, but ARC is ok)

What I don’t really need or like: Remote playing (controlling other speakers in the house), paying Tidal if I want good recommendations, kinda bloated and slow app

I’ve used plenty of #vlc , #foobar, #clementine / #strawberry, even #amarok back in the day

I’m really looking for any music solution that’s a little bit of a media manager w/metadata, especially if it can manage all that on a server.

I don’t mind paying for services, I’m just tired of the Roon bills on top of streaming services too.

Like - I want less than Roon but more than VLC.

Any recommendations?

Besides Clementine and Strawberry what other mp3 players would you recommend for #linuxMint? I'd like something that can offer a media library similar to #foobar or #winamp. Creating and keeping multiple playlists would be a nice feature as well.

You can follow a tag, but not a boolean combination of tags. No way to follow # DC and not # Metro(rail)

You can mute a single person or an entire tag, but not a person who won't stop flooding a tag with bad content. (No way to mute @johndoe and #foobar )

Most clients don't allow news feed filter to just tweets by mutuals vs tweets of a tag.

@PublicChaffinch isn't that the only way to make "search work"?
E.g. if I want to find some #foobar content, I can check the hashtag and see who posted something about it?

Lüfterlosen Touch-Kassen-PC, welchen ich mal gebraucht erstanden und den ich als #Foobar-Terminal eingesetzt hatte, wiederbelebt. Er hatte eines der Windows-10-Updates nicht überstanden. Wenn da nicht #Windows10 schon drauf gewesen wäre: Ich hätte es nicht aufgespielt.

When I was young and new to everything, and using early computer documentation in an era of not-enough-information, I was totally confused the first time I came across the whole thing with #foobar-based examples.

I thought - have I missed some classes? Are these operators? What does bar do? What does foo do? How come I haven't seen this before. Do I need to install something?

Irgendwann vor wenigen Tagen? (Wochen? Geht so schnell im Alter) war hier die Rede von #Musik bei der #Arbeit. Dachte, das wäre @kuketzblog gewesen, finds aber jetzt nicht mehr wieder. Ich hab bequeme TV-Kopfhörer, und Standmikros für die Meetings, und höre, wenn ich nicht allein bin, immer Musik zwischen Meetings. Hilft mir beim #Entspannen und #daempft die externen Störgeräusche. Außerdem übertönt es das Kalkrieseln. Auf Linux experimentiere ich noch. Auf Windows dient mir #foobar hierfür am besten. Es spielt viele Formate ab, ist erweiterbar, und spielt nur die Audiospur, egal, von welchem Format.
