Monotype just issued their “Global Font Use and Forecasting Survey Report”. https://www.monotype.com/resources/ebook/global-font-use-forecasting-survey-2024?utm_source=mastodon Unlike previous MyFonts surveys, they engaged an independent market research company. Over 4,777 respondents is a decent sized group!

@typenetwork updates from CEO Matthew Rechs:
1. They added 20 foundries this year.
2. In Q1 2024, “foundry partners [besides Font Bureau] earned just shy of $1 Million – about 20% higher than our next-best quarter ever.”
3. “Adobe Fonts contributed a bit less than half of that.”
4. “Of the top ten independent foundries on TN who earned the most in Q1 (all $100k+/annually) only one also offers their fonts for sale through Monotype.”

Monotype has bought the rights to 27 font families from Sharp Type, which Lucas Sharp refers to as their “legacy collection”. https://www.creativeboom.com/news/monotype-partners-with-sharp-type-to-add-27-font-families-to-library/
This is different than other recent MT purchases, such as Colophon in December, which included the complete foundry & team. https://www.monotype.com/company/press-release/acclaimed-colophon-foundry-joins-monotype-family
Future Sharp Type releases will be available from MT, but the company appears to still run independently.

Currently building out a typeface storefront for myself and I'm curious: for those who don't use a type tester plugin, do you worry about using WOFF fonts to generate a type tester? Thinking from the angle of people who would dig through source code and try to steal the file.
...or am I just overthinking this too much? 😅

In response to the consistently dropping royalty rates in font retail (MyFonts, Fontspring, etc.), Font Bros – one of the smaller shops in the industry – is committing to their 65% rate. The distribution contract guarantees the rate cannot change without mutual agreement. https://typedrawers.com/discussion/4859/65-now-and-forever-font-bros

“The land is wide, and there is room for all, without jostling or elbowing another out of the way.” — The opening letter from MacKellar Smiths & Jordan’s 1885 reissue of their 11th Specimen Book (1878). MS&J was probably the most inventive US foundry before the ATF era, with more original typefaces than any other. https://archive.org/details/cu31924032183760/page/n17/mode/2up
