First time making a font, already traced it on Inkscape. What should I use to adjust the kerning and export it to otf/ttf??

📢 Shout-out for @nicoverbruggen, and I think it's the first time I use a real Mastodon handle.
Nico had the courage to dive deep into the fossil FontForge UI code, and his contribution greatly improved the menubar experience.

📢 Today's shout-out is for Adolfo Ovalles who developed an all-new staggeringly beautiful UI theme for #FontForge, complete with 310 (yes, three hundred and ten❗) new icons in light and dark.

Wow, @[email protected] wrote a full-blown font editor for Android, with FontForge as a backend. I don't understand much about mobile development, but it looks really impressive!

#FontForge has a new scaling operation, thanks to a contribution from the Oscar-winning digital artist Greg Ercolano 🏆 @[email protected].
The new scaling is much more in-line with modern UI conventions, and hopefully improves another small bit in FontForge usability.

Trying to design my own font after giving up a couple of times over the course of years. Drawing letters with #Inkscape and importing svg files to #fontforge is working for me. Getting results after spending the whole week. I got the uppercases covered and like the flattened, sturdy impression but still doubting how they will look when put together. Anyway, svg templates provide me a point where I can start over. Cannot absorb everything there is in #typography and #fontdesign at once. #DIY

Another GTK-based dialog in #FontForge - Histogram UI. Perhaps not very useful by itself, but complicated. It was fun to port, and it introduced a few important pieces of generic functionality. 6 dialogs out of ~150, and counting (very slowly) ⏳

With a lot of help from the community, today I hopefully fixed a nasty and elusive FontForge crash which I have been chasing for months. https://github.com/fontforge/fontforge/issues/5786

hmm ... trying to modify a pixel font to include special characters like äöüéê etc. is a pain in the 4$s. i am really thinking to skip localization even though i finished english, german, french and italian. in german i can substitute ä=ae, ö=oe, ü=ue, ß=ss. but in french, everything looks like I have a spelling disability when éèê etc. are missing and just be the standard characters. time to scrape the net for a similar font with special characters. #font #development #gamedev #fontforge

I bought a personal windows PC because I refuse to give money to the Apple ecosystem, and Android doesn't host font development software. I think this is the open-source program people recommended, though I'm not sure, am about to try it out for this week's homework, on the last week of my 2nd course

I have created a ‘sortsmill’ organization on Github so I could fork this project I got driven out of years ago, by bullying: https://github.com/sortsmill/fontforge
If I had stayed in the project, it would have had multilanguage interfaces, not just Python. I mean every language under the sun. I had already made the basic changes in my own stuff.
As it stands, I might do it again and submit the changes. But machines are fast now. More likely I will make a Python-Ada shim for it.

In a continuing flurry of boring #FontForge news, I ported two more dialogs to GTK: bitmap strikes and problem detector.
This boosts the number of modernized UI dialogs to 3 out of ~150. That's 2%, yay! 💪

Fredrick Brennan, one of FontForge chief maintainers and a board member, passed away on January 10 at the age of 31.
I didn't work together with him, as I became involved with FontForge a few years after he moved on to develop MFEK. Nevertheless his essay "Why MFEK" (https://github.com/MFEK/docs/blob/master/doc/Why.md) deeply influenced me. In fact it was Fredrick's gloomy assessment of the state of FontForge that brought me on the crusade to prove him wrong.

The first real FontForge plugin has landed! Just five years after the introduction of plugin framework, the Variable Font Plugin by @[email protected] is here. Grab your free copy at https://pypi.org/project/fontforge-variable-font/

Today's FontForge shout-out 📢 goes to Skef, one of the long-term maintainers. He did an enormous amount of work to clean up the codebase for C++ compatibility and made the Python module importable by the standard Windows Python installation.
No screenshots today, but trust me, it was a really huge project.

Oh btw, made another 8x16 VGA based font, featuring _that helmet_ on the @ character/player :} #fontforge #ZMAngband #roguelikedev

#ZMAngband #traditionalroguelike #roguelikedev still glued to fckn' #FontForge and getting some decently nice designs. .fon format is like trying to read a throwing of ritual bones, pff, ridiculous. Sometimes I feel like a paleodev...

Squeezing the #FontForge program, #nightshift #roguelikedev #ZMAngband #traditionalroguelike the results are GORGEOUS. Ascii looks stupendous on the Variant. Did some more replacement for the characters that I like from other fonts, upgraded the rendering to give the final smooth looking and boy, does it look stunning or what!? I will upload screenshots later on. This is awesome. Along with the 256 ascii Technicolor upgrade!! heck yeah!!

A funny infosec thread is unwinding right now in FontForge.
Some company published 12 CVEs on a dormant (over 10 years!) SourceForge account, and they were of course promptly ignored.
Half year later they made 4 of them public and finally reached us at GitHub, where these advisories were ignored once again, this time explicitly. https://github.com/fontforge/fontforge/issues/5706

#FontForge has about 150 windows and dialogs, and I have converted 1 (one!) of them to GTK3. This firmly places us in nearly 1% of the total, and by the year 2100 this UI modernization project is very likely to be completed. 💪🏆
And it has a brand new search box 🦚. Also ruined the sorting in the process, but let's not be too critical.

📢 Shoutout to Mihail (@[email protected]) who had an itch and scratched it! Character Variant Feature Parameters table support is out with https://github.com/fontforge/fontforge/pull/5662.
In a perfect manifestation of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, this feature was discussed at typo.social https://typo.social/@TiroTypeworks/115414458393802728 just a couple of weeks ago.

After days of trial and error with #font creation, I had to pick up the basics of this field, it's full of rules. For now, I've whipped up three font sets that still need finishing, and this particular one was built using a few different programs #Blender, #Inkscape, and of course #FontForge.Hoping to release these sets as soon as possible. #b3d

Using #Blender, #Inkscape, and #FontForge together lets you create cool and unique #fonts. I picked a font, then applied a material to give it a worn, chipped-paint effect, I traced Blender’s rendering in Inkscape, saved the file as an #SVG, and fixed any errors with FontForge to get a clean, polished #font. I might just get into making fonts! #b3d #blender3d

Using #Blender 5.0 and #GreasePencil, I created these #fonts. I still need to finish the full set, but I’m happy with how they turned out. I also used #FontForge to build the font from SVG files exported via Grease Pencil, which now supports exporting Bézier curves as SVGs. #b3d
And I learned a lot... The fonts Making is demanding. #Blender3d -
In the end, after a few tries, I managed to create the #font characters with consistent heights and generate the first letters uniformly using #FontForge, exporting them from #Blender with #GreasePencil in #SVG Bézier format. #b3d #blender3d
