Okay, that helps a lot. Now I can simplify things for you specifically for the Mastodon mobile app on iPhone…

Search for a hashtag on the search view. In the results, tap on the one with the hashtag. That will open a feed of posts using it. Tap the “follow” button at the top, and you’re done.

To see/manage which hashtags you’re following, go to your profile (avatar in the nav bar). Next to “edit profile,” tap the button with three dots. In that menu, tap “followed hashtags” to see a complete list of the ones you’re following.

Posts with followed hashtags will show up in your main “following” feed on the “home” view. You can also tap the menu in the upper-left corner to view a feed only for a specific hashtag.

You can also tap any hashtag in a post to see that hashtag feed with its follow button.

I've just emigrated to a new community here which looks like a nice fit for me. But rather than importing all my following/ers over decided to make a fresh start (kinda).

I followed a few of the most valuable posters here, but the thing I would recommend more than anything if you are coming from twatter - #FollowHashtags & use them mindfully. Even if you follow only a handful of accounts, you'll have lots of good stuff on Home feed.

Very useful tip on how to follow hashtags (and I found the article at the link answered the question I had).

So now I can follow a hashtag. Is there someway to "click the bell" so that the posts appear in my Notifications timeline?

I use that because my Home timeline moves so fast I can't possibly see all the posts.

So do I understand correctly that when you #followHashtags on Masto, you will not only see the hashtags that are already on your server via other users following, boosting or favouriting remote posts, like the federated timeline. But this new feature fetches all followed #hashtags from servers that are connected to your server.

Am I right? Proof? I get posts via hashtags from users that are not followed, liked or boosted by any fellow server member and my own followers. I think is great and I especially want a dedicated timelime for this. Maybe compared with the group feature.

I just learned how to follow hashtags. Turns out you can't use the phone app to do it. Not sure why. You have to use a web client either on a laptop or you can open a web instance on your phone.

Once you do that, click the hashtag icon on the right, search, then click the "follow" icon (as pictured).

@JRChilton I went looking for this feature this past week in the most common iOS apps. On my iPhone SE, Tooot does let you follow hashtags (see Follow link in screen grab). Toot! & Metatext don’t (so far). Would be nice to have it universally available! #FollowHashtags #Wishes

Edit: the Mastodon app for iOS doesn’t permit following hashtags either, but I think Oliver is using Android, so he should probably try the Tusky app.

Being able to #followhashtags is a great feature of Mastodon, you can customize the timeline to your preference without the blue algorithm getting on your nerves.

Boost if you want others to see something you liked. Favorite if you want only yourself and the author to see something you liked.

I know I am slow on the uptake, but I just realized I can #followhashtags #hashtags and this is already enlivening my feed. Please remember to use hashtags.

Added support for the "read:follows" API permission to my hashtag gathering script, so it can now see all the tags I have marked to follow in the UI (e.g. Tusky) and picks those out from the aggregated firehose using "read:search"

Script needs a user_token+server name, but otherwise does not have access to any account details

#Followhashtags is a great way to tailor #Mastodon content.

Enable the Mastodon advanced web interface. Then search for a #hashtag and pin the column. Then in the settings for that column you can include and exclude (only a few) additional hashtags.

There's no way to resize the columns (except zoom in/out for that broswer tab) and no way (that I know of) to hide and recall columns.

@niklas I am interested in the details of how it is on a single-user instance.

Does it search all the toots from users you follow?
Does it search all the instances from the users you follow?
Does it also search on instances if you don't follow anyone there but have boosted one tweet from it?

I've just found out #HowTo #FollowHashtags on Tusky Android for Mastodon: Account preferences > Tabs > plus symbol in the bottom right > #hashtags! add the word without the #hashtag symbol

@palafo Not sure I would approach discovering Mastodon from that angle.

Instead, perhaps newcomers should use the web browser version of Mastodon, and follow #hashtag topics (you can’t do this in an app currently).

If you run a #mastodon #instance with #mastodon 4.0 #mastodon4 #mastodon4_0 then you can #follow #hashtags #followHashtags. Does it make sense to have a #personalInstance with no other members & #filter the #fediverse #timeline & follow hashtags instead of having any #localTimeline at all? The power of mastadon is less if sticking to a local timeline & having to ignore the fediverse timeline because it is has too many posts. Does a personal 4.0 server help? Or just wait for #fosstodon upgrade?
