  1. Tha a' bhliadhna a' tionndadh — the year is turning.
Five days to solstice. The magnolias are browning at the edges and dropping their saucer petals on the red clay; the fireflies have started their slow Morse in the wet dark. The old wheel doing what no congress can repeal.

  3. Yesterday's #wassailing.
Led by the #Eynsham #Morris, villagers processed through the orchard banging pots and pans to scare evil spirits, and singing to wake the apple trees and encourage them to produce a good harvest.

Spicy cider was readily available to everyone present, warmed on a roaring fire. And toast was hung in the trees - a gift for the good spirits. The birds will be pleased. 😀

Long may this ancient #folktradition continue!

  5. A bit of fun for a Friday... Last week we went to #AbbotsBromley, #Staffordshire, to witness the extraordinary & ancient #HornDance, a #FolkDance that has taken place for perhaps 800+ years. I've wanted to see this for years!

One of the reindeer antlers has been radio carbon dated to 1065CE.

  8. A new block to carve! As a May Day baby I have always been interested in all the various folk traditions of May Day (and the evening before) like Beltane, Walpurgisnacht and May Day celebrations.

  10. The Hunting of the Earl of Rone takes place each May bank holiday in Combe Martin, Devon. It's one of the most elaborate pub crawls I've ever seen and a real treat to watch. #devon #folktradition #combemartin #earlofrone

  11. Happy Solstice! These delightful lanterns and Carol singers came up our street last night as they traipsed around the Pitsmoor Advent Window Trail. We piled out into the darkness to sing Diadem with them. Photo: Sarah Trueman #folk #wintersolstice #ritual #folktradition #Carols #community #lanterns

  13. Listening to the new episode of my favourite podcast of all time this morning. Combines so much that I love: folk music, the outdoors, seasonality, walking, and human connection. A sprinkling of radical politics. And in this episode, history and a bit of folklore!

December ep of #FolkonFoot is the Wexford Carols with Caitriona O
    Leary.

I don't think Folk on Foot has a presence here, but I wish they did.

  15. With all of the worker resistance, striking activity, etc. going on these days, I'm thinking a lot about the deep tradition in folk music of songs from the worker perspective.

One I've been singing lately that I really like is "Blackleg Miner". The name comes from the nickname striking coal workers gave to strike breaking workers who could be seen with coal dust on their trousers.

    Here's a nice rendition:
