#ArtAdventCalendar day 20: a #FolktaleWeek2024 piece. I thought I would tell another Canadian #folktale about a flaming ghost ship or strange light phenomenon which has been observed in New Brunswick in the Baie des Chaleurs. There are a few different versions of the folklore but the one I like is told in A.W.H. Eaton’s poem ‘The Phantom Light of the Baie des Chaleurs’ & I 🧵

Day 19 #ArtAdventCalendar: my #linocut of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale Thumbelina (Tommelise) I made for #FolktaleWeek2024.
In my illustration with collaged Japanese papers, Thumbelina rides the swallow, narrator of our tale, at the moment she finally meets someone her size and to her liking, in the tiny flower-fairy prince, surrounded by flowers.

I made a Playlist on MakerTube for all the livestream recordings of my work in Procreate for this year's Folktale Week.
https://makertube.net/w/p/uyqsgLyZkgABdFiGUj5r3r
It's all the livestreams I made on Twitch and Makertube around the seven prompt words for this year: Mist, Gate, Blight, Trail, Depth, Bone, and Blossom.

Going live today, 1-4:00pm PST (UTC-7) on MakerTube and Twitch, where I’ll be wrapping up the Folktale Week event with the final prompt word: “Bloom.” I’ll be doing some illustrated page backgrounds inspired by the style of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.
Soothing music, chill vibe, and tea! Lurkers welcome!

The last #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt is #FolktaleWeekBlossom so I printed an illustration of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale Thumbelina (Tommelise).
In my #linocut illustration with collaged Japanese papers, Thumbelina rides the swallow, narrator of our tale, at the moment she finally meets someone her size and to her liking, in the tiny flower-fairy prince, surrounded by flowers. 🧵

Today's 2024 Folktale Week word prompt is "Depth".
I turned to the work of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh for inspiration, and came up with this. Little Red's cloak is billowing out around her in a stylized water-scape.
I then made it a greeting card!

AND a free phone wallpaper! Enjoy!

Today's #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt word is "Blight". I'm not sure how to make that pretty, personally, so I just used it as an opportunity to create a background image that frames a piece of text by living in the gutter of the page spread... I think it'll be quite useful and evocative when actually used as intended.
But here's a phone wallpaper version for you, just in case you like this particular tree on your phone! 😊

Going live tonight on MakerTube and Twitch tonight 7-9:00pm PST (UTC-8), doing the prompt word “Bone” for #FolktaleWeek. Referring to Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh for inspiration.

Here's my image inspired by the #FolktaleWeek prompt word, "Gate".
I thought about making it a picket fence with a gate, but they weren't popular until about a century after the period I'm setting my story in.
They were originally wooden tree trunk pikes. Yoicks. Brings whole new meaning to "good fences make good neighbors".
But then settled for a more magical mysterious sort of portal gate. It helped me imagine my variation of the Little Red tale in that sort of setting. Not sure this ultimately would end up being used, but it was a great exercise!

For the 2nd #FolktaleWeek2024 #FolktaleWeekGate I made a #linocut illustrating the Chinese legend of Longmen or The Dragon Gate atop a waterfall on a legendary mountain. According to folklore, many carp swim upstream in the mighty Yellow River, against the strong current, but few are brave or strong enough to make the jump over the waterfall where it cut through a cleft in the Longmen mountains. 🧵1/n

Here's last year's #FolktaleWeek images, as well as this year's first entry for the new one.
Last year's words were Lost, Ink, Sea, Sleep, Underground, Illusion, and Found.
I incorporated them into an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood I'm still developing in my head. Lots of great story twists and turns, and it was really useful.
This year, for #FolktaleWeek2024, I'm using the new prompt words to create background imagery to place underneath text. I'm happy with how they're turning out.
I probably won't be able to complete all seven new words by the end of the week, but since it's primarily an Instagram challenge to drive traffic to specific host accounts (and I left Instagram a long time ago) I'm not worried about deadlines. I took my own sweet time last year, and will do so this year, too.
So here's a phone wallpaper version of "Mist," originally for a page of text.

Today, I’m diving off the deep end as I develop an image for the #FolktaleWeek prompt word, “Depth”.
I’ll be attempting to use Scottish Art Nouveau’s “Glasgow Four” art as stylistic inspiration, fusing it with the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. In Procreate on my iPad Pro. Ahem.
1-4:00pm PST (UTC-8), on MakerTube and Twitch.

The penultimate prompt for #FolktaleWeek2024 is bone, and I immediately thought of Vasilisa the Beautiful carrying the skull lantern away from Baba Yaga’s hut (famously on chicken legs with a fence made of bone). Here’s the first block as carving begins.
I’m sure this story will be chosen by others for #FolktaleWeekBone too. It’s a popular one every #FolktaleWeek.
I was first introduced to the story by one of my best friends …🧵1/2

Drawing directly on my block (and messing up the claws but you won’t see that when I am done) for the second #folktaleweek2024 prompt #folktaleWeekGate.
Maybe you know this one? A folktale about jumping carp, a gate and dragons 🐉 🐟
