In some ways this could be a good thing; anything that stops the #LNP getting a majority of seats in their own right makes life difficult for them & a diversity of voices in always a good thing. The Mad Katters (#KAP) have some very odd policies, and some deplorable policies (like winding back the protection of the Great Barrier Reef) and the "Carbon Tax" but neither of these will get any traction. Obviously I would like the seats to go #Green but that is effectively impossible in the #FNQ.

The thing about there being a cyclone about, is it really brings the sky candy.
The first is looking east-southeast, toward the developing system. The second is facing west-northwest (at dusk). One huge band, stretching hundreds of kilometers out to sea, where it tangles with outer bands into a vortex shooting skyward. Or they will, tomorrow some time.

I hope people understand that the horrific #flood waters in and around #Cairns #FNQ will drain into the sea, taking all of the detritus from towns and villages and cities with it.
So, it's not someone throwing a plastic straw into the sea.

Cooktown in Far North Queensland has only 3 days of food left and is low on water due to flooding at their water treatment plant. The town is preparing to receive 300 evacuees from another town.
Cooktown is an isolated town in Cape York at the best of times. With the wide-spread flooding and road closures in the Far North it will not be easy to restock the town.

The rainfall totals happening in FNQ in the last week are mind-boggling.
Myola got > 2000 mm in 5 days! That's close to what Cairns gets in a year, 800 mm more than Brisbane's and Sydney's annual average, and nearly 4 times London's annual average. It's a lot of water!
Thinking of everyone up north, what a battering to get so early in the wet season.

To complete the Thorsborne trail you have to ignore a crocodile warning while crossing a wide, waist deep river. Second picture shows my wife finishing off the biggest crossing. All good fun 😅#crocodiles #straya #FNQ

Just back from a bucket-list hike along the Thorsborne trail, Hinchinbrook Island in far north Queensland. A moderately challenging 4 days - the main challenges being rock hopping and a few river crossings. Absolutely spectacular and with brilliant waterfall-fed swimming holes along the way. 10/10 would recommend. Saw no crocodiles. Which was a good thing given the river crossings. #hiking #bushwalking #straya #FNQ

My son found a bowerbird bower a few blocks from home. I think it's a Great Bowerbird (that's its name, not my opinion).
This is not a nest. It is a Tinder profile that uses Instagram filters. The male builds this tunnel, and carefully arranges pale grey bits and pieces in an exact pattern, bigger at the front, smaller near the tunnel, shiny out the back. Then he stands in it. The foreshortening makes him look huge and sexy.

Love that you can walk the promenade in town and have this to yourself.
30 degrees 60% humidity and the perfect breeze.

#FNQ, so-called #Australia: 2023 #FirstNations #Homelessness #Fundraiser
https://chuffed.org/project/g7xljej9ebo1"Societal conditions still have First Nations people highly over represented in homelessness and extreme poverty statistics; even more so now with the national crisis in rental/housing availability.
There are just not enough shelter beds and support for mob. In FNQ there are only 12 emergency shelter beds between Gimuy (Cairns) and Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands) for homeless youth.
As a First Nations grassroots collective, we can provide direct support that many have been unable to get from Gov Depts and NGOs.
This is mob lookin after mob, without the wasteful overheads, restrictive practices and proper big admin costs of the big NGOs.
Help us to address the complex problem of First Nations homelessness in FNQ with the experience, community rapport and empathy that only First Nations People and staunch allies can provide!"

Our lovely beach, only a few steps from the house. With our heavy hearts we had a good pause, some deep breathing and stretch of the eyes.

Hot goss! Word is that there is an enormous croc on our breach and I am being physically restrained from going to see.

My friend and her daughter got to meet one of the reef residents yesterday. His name is Wally and he's a Wrasse.

Ok, breathe. This is out the doors of our granny flat looking towards the road. I can hear the rain as it hits the big banana leaves. There is a slight breeze and cicadas are being noisy in the distance.

(If you head left about 200m you'll reach the beach where locals spotted a 3.5 metre croc before Christmas.)
